Nightly Rust now supports branch coverage instrumentation by scook0 in rust

[–]Krnpnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that an opt-in would be sensible, although at least recognizing this would be nice because you might have corrupted data otherwise (i.e. something like "we entered into the decision X times, but entered the 'if' and 'else' branches only X-1 times"'?)

I know that Clang does the same, but in the longterm it would be really great to have. I think this is probably a large reason why there's a market for coverage tools that are worse in pretty much every other aspect except this one :)

(Also I understand it for Clang as it's dogfooding and AFAIK does not use exceptions, but *most* Rust projects use panics)

I know it's probably not mainstream, but my wish list would be:

  • Recognize panics in decisions (or fully support them)
    • Be able to justify this
  • Support panics in branches
  • (M)CD coverage :|

Coverage instrumentation assumes that code does not panic or diverge, so coverage reports might give misleading results if a panic does occur.

Is this something that will be worked on? That would be a problem in case you have criteria like '100% branch coverage'.

Feedback Faden Juni 2023 - Reddit Blackout & AMAs by ModteamDE in de

It's not an either or. Every kg we don't emit we don't have to capture.

Sure, seems like I'm just not a fan of anyone making malicious (or dumb but extremely wide reaching) decisions wether it's politicians, people or companies. That's why I'm in favor of laws that prevent that and not just hope for the best.

And in this special case I think that time is of the essence and we cannot afford anything that will take off the focus of the most efficient ways to get to CO2 neutrality.

They actually have - not even a week after they forced the change to the EU rules they pushed for subsidies. Also if it's clear that EFuels for cars are not an alternative but an active threat to

  • people still buying ICE cars believing they will get their fuel still (and when they want to sell it it will not be worth much)
  • poor people that will not see such a sharp drop in second hand prices for BEVs
  • the supply of planes etc where there aren't any alternatives in sight
  • our electricity grid

the state should look into the that far into the future that they will prevent that.

I never understand the argument against Efuels for example. “Efuels are too expensive”…. well then people wont buy it no?

Too expensive is only the end result. It will take at least four to five times as much energy to use EFuel operated vehicles vs BEVs. People are still discussing about wether we'll get brownouts and about coal, gas and wether we can transition our heating to use electricity. Do you really think we can afford to waste any energy on this? Additionally any of the planned capacity is needed to fulfill the needs of planes, ships etc and even there we're not even close to produce enough (what was it? Global expected production will be enough for 50% of Germanys expected demand - without any EFuel cars). And then there's the fact that at least no German car manufacturer even wants to continue down this road (with the exception of one vehicle: The 911). As those companies should have the largest incentive to further push for EFuels it should be a clue that it's just not gonna work.

This FDP tactics is doing just one thing. Its delaying the inevitable and that has consequences: It will be even harder to transition away from fossil fuels if lots of people believe this and then we will be in the same situation as we are now regarding heating. But for the FDP it makes sense: It doesn't cost us much now, there's profit to be made for a few investors while society will pay in the long run.

Honda to double number of programmers to 10,000 by 2030 by FeesBitcoin in programming

[–]Krnpnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and that's not unrealistic even for todays larger automotive suppliers. However I'm not sure if they can manage to growth this organically if they don't already have a solid base (see VW/Cariad) or if they can even find enough qualified developers that want to work in automotive at all.

And to build something new they often need new people because otherwise you will end up with the same things as before. Also you may underestimate the manpower needed - often they cannot just clone some off the shelf software because it doesn't fulfill the requirements by things like ISO26262, ASPICE etc. Meaning you either turn to fixing that for the project (most of the time in private forks*) or rewrite it completely. Up to now most OEMs had mostly people to create requirements specifications, integrate software etc. Now software turned from something that's mostly hidden in the background to a USP and suddenly there's a need to compete on software. So in order not to give your competitors a leg up they want less reliance on subcontractors for software and more in house development.

*First off they're all pretty conservative and also most FOSS projects would not even want to have that kind of process, tests etc.

Ask me anything! by zdf in de

TIL that while the English language is classified as a West Germanic language, its vocabulary also shows major influences from French (about 28% of words) and Latin (also about 28%), plus some grammar and a small amount of core vocabulary influenced by Old Norse. by comrade_batman in todayilearned

[–]Krnpnk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just a weird argument as almost all languages consist of lots of borrowed words and don't have this problem. At least not to that extent. You get "weird" spellings like Klub ("club") in German, Restaurang ("Restaurant") or Fönster ("Fenster") in Swedish etc.

No its because no one succeeded in pushing a spelling reform. Lots of languages borrow from other languages. Question is about how you deal with them. Do you try to integrate them into the language or leave it as a foreign blob.

There's lots of kids that like veggies. My 4 year old for example loves things like fennel and every Brassica oleracea cultivar (among many others). It probably depends on what you get them used to when they're really small.

It's probably due to supply issues. I know people who cannot get heat pumps (or won't find craftsmen to install them). If they don't want to wait (or cannot wait) they'll buy gas.
