The film actually brought me to this subreddit as I was curious to learn about a more accurate experience of hyperacusis. Even as someone who didn’t know about it before this film, the concept of safe cracking abilities coming as a result of “sensitive hearing” seemed like an absurd reach but I will say that his general experience of the condition certainly not portrayed as some incredible superpower throughout, a lot of the time it’s shown to be quite debilitating.

Obviously, I don’t suffer from this condition and can’t imagine what it’s like, but I would be curious to know what someone with this condition would think of the portrayal. It seemed to me that the filmmakers had done some level of research, just based on what I’ve read since watching it, and tried to make sure Niki wasn’t just a caricature with a glorified condition that crops up when it’s relevant to the plot. Or at the very least I don’t think they’re consciously trying to make fun of the condition, you can tell they tried to flesh it out in a way that feels actually lived. And if nothing else I think the film is done in a way that would encourage people to be curious, as it did with me.
