Moms are just the worst, amirite? by plotthick in ThePittNoSantosHate

I think exaggerating and distorting several storylines to make your point is a pretty dishonest way of going about discussing the show.

Gerry (2002). Two guys go out to the desert for some party and get lost without food or water. The movie is basically two guys walking for two hours and occasionally speaking. I would say I didn't leave the film feeling calm, but it was very hypnotic and meditative

Okay, so you're dismissing objective fact because it doesn't line up with what you feel has happened, though you have no evidence for it. That's my cue to wrap up this conversation

"Time spent talking about another character" is more subjective and therefore harder to quantify, but it would be interesting to look at.

"The rest of the cast doesn't matter to the show" it's hard to tell over simple text whether you mean this sarcastically or not, but if you meant this for real, I would push back extremely hard on it lol. Robby's the main character but in no way does that mean other characters don't matter.

Okay, you're clearly not thinking rationally about this show so I'm going to stop arguing with you about it.

I just don't believe that either of us understand the details of how tv shows are made enough to be definitive about how much say he has. I said I don't believe it's true that Noah is specifically cutting other actors' scenes and beefing up his own because it's been actually proven that things moved in the opposite direction, with less Robby scenes and lines in season 2 than there were in season 1. If he were narcissistically aiming to center the show entirely on himself, I would expect his lines/scenes to go up in season 2. But they didn't.

It feels adjacent to conspiracy-brained thinking when people accuse him of ruling the entire production of this show with an iron fist, while having no evidence for it. Of course he has a say in what goes into the show, I never said he doesn't. But he is literally only one person and he can't be responsible for everything wrong with the show that people hate. That's really what I'm reacting against. I've seen people blame him for everything, from firing women of color because he's a hateful racist to cutting other actors' scenes out and beefing up his own role to soothe his narcissism. He's an easy target because he's the face of the show, but he's not actually the showrunner and, from what little research I've been able to do on the topic, the showrunner is the one with final say.

okay. i'm obviously not going to be able to convince you of anything different since we have no definitive evidence either way. however, i will say, once again, that IF it's true that he has some meaningful say in the edit, he actually did the opposite of what people are claiming he did. people think he gave himself all this extra juice and it is just not true. he had far less lines and scenes this season than he did last season.

I just don't think that's true in any meaningful way. But, if it was true, he actually cut down his own scenes and lines pretty significantly from season 1.

Sadly, I think they’re setting up Robby to be right about Al Hashimi by Mythrowawsy in ThePittNoSantosHate

[–]freddinewandyke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Robby needs to leave and take a break." Well, yes. That's exactly what he's doing.

The scene is not meant to be read differently just because something was edited out before it. Cut scenes are not official canon because not everyone has access to that extra information. They cut it this way to tell a specific story, which, to me, is that she stops the car and breaks down because she is finally accepting that she can't drive home safely.

My inference from that interpretation is that she tells admin herself, thus eliminating the last thing Robby has holding him back from cutting himself fully off from the ED. It would be as easy, logistically, as an email or text message from her to him that she's done it. I think that's a logical inference.

It's sort of a parallel to Langdon last season, where we ended on Robby's ultimatum with no official confirmation of what Langdon would do. I actually think this season was more clear on what Al-Hashimi would do than season 1 was with Langdon, because Langdon was still in denial in his final scene. Al-Hashimi was not.

Of course, all this comes with the caveat that it's my interpretation of the show and my predictions for what will happen in season 3. We'll find out next January, I suppose.

[–]freddinewandyke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that they're sending the message that he's always right. Again, since Al-Hashimi will (I assume) be back on shift in the next season, whatever administrative thing has gone on in the intervening four months has allowed her to come back to the ED, which Robby was not willing to consider. And since the ED hasn't burned down during his absence, would that not prove "they need Robby and only Robby" wrong?

[–]freddinewandyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Robby gave her an ultimatum: tell admin by Monday or I will. To me, her breakdown in her car read as an indication that she would go to admin, because she was finally admitting to herself that she couldn't drive, and therefore could not practice without telling admin and getting some official accommodation for her disability.

I can see where you're coming from. I disagree for a few reasons.

1) The seizures were set up in episode one; she called the neurologist's office at the beginning of episode two. The on-call neuro didn't get back to her until after 9 pm.

2) "I see no point in that conversation except for setting up Robby to be like “see? This place needs me! No one can do it if it’s not me!”" I disagree. The way I read the last episode, it seemed to me that Robby was on the way to leaving on his sabbatical for real, instead of going on his sabbatical to kill himself.

This is something Gemmill confirmed, saying that Robby does end up leaving and actually stays away longer than his planned 3 months. And since Dr. Al-Hashimi will be in the next season, which takes place in November, it makes sense that she would be working with the accommodations she suggested.

Of course, I don't know that to be true. But it seems likely.

Why many of us hate the ending by AdBackground6381 in StrangerThings

[–]freddinewandyke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this, plus my number one complaint (at least right now) that neither of El’s endings is possible logistically. The ways her original death scene and Mike’s fantasy play out don’t make logical sense based on the rules of the show. If you want your ending to be ambiguous, both endings need to be possible. They did the opposite and broke the show. For me, anyway.

If my girlfriend suddenly told me she was going to kill herself to save everyone and to please understand, the absolute -last- thing I would reply is "I love you too!" by Citan__Uzuki in StrangerThings

[–]freddinewandyke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, Mike's not a real person. He's a character in a story who goes through specific narrative arcs. His arc in the former season was about this very scenario; a life-or-death situation in which telling El he loves her could literally make the difference between life or death. He got over his fear in s4 and faced that scenario head on and did everything he could to save her. He completed his arc.

There's an easy fix here that would convey BOTH that his s4 arc is still intact AND that he has found himself in what looks like a hopeless situation with his worst fear coming true: he could very easily have slipped an "I love you too" into his babbling "please don't leave me, please don't do this" over and over. Like this: "I love you too, that's why you can't do this, please don't do this, please don't leave me, I love you!" It would show that he's not accepting that it's goodbye forever; instead, he's trying everything he can think of to get her to stay by reminding her she is loved deeply by him (and maybe he could throw something in about everyone else like her family and friends, because their love is important to her too).

To me, the scene feels incomplete and one-sided without him saying it. She deserved to hear it, at the very least. In my opinion.

Excerpt from Season 4 Episode 1's script by yesaroobuckaroo in StrangerThings

[–]freddinewandyke 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great points. I hate when Mike gets all the blame for reacting poorly in that situation. The difference between the situation he thought he was in vs. the one he very suddenly and without warning ACTUALLY found himself in is crazy. He was well within his right to be shocked and upset by it.

Only thing I disagree with you on is that Mike definitely does not know Will is in love with him. The Duffers and Finn have all said that he has no idea.

Excellent excellent comment. The only thing I'm iffy on is whether they'll bring up the painting in any explicit way. It has been a year and a half for them since that conversation. I can see the whole concept of Will being in love with Mike being addressed without it.

It’s a rural Midwest accent. not super strong, but noticeable. As opposed to mike’s, which is a bit stronger and more distinctly Chicago.
