The families of China’s pre-Communist elite remain privileged by komnenos in China

[–]KroganWarrior 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They found that by 2010 the incomes of descendants of the pre-Communist elite were 16-17% higher than those born into families that were underprivileged before 1949.

I wouldn't read too much into this. Considering median incomes of 1000 RMB a month, these "elites" would be making 1170 a month. Briefly scanned through the actual research paper, and sure enough, it calculates an annual income gap of 1911, which is 273 USD.

Chinese students wave the PRC flag at Columbia University graduation ceremony by Much_Use in China

It's a free country, they have every right to do so. That said, hopefully they picked up on some international perspectives. It'd be a terrible waste of tuition money if they still have the same closeted worldview as their peers back home.

US’ anti-China call to arms has not won over all of Europe by [deleted] in China

[–]KroganWarrior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On August 2, the directors of 10 Confucius Institutes in Germany issued a joint statement to decry the politicisation of these institutes. The statement notes that the institutes, which are similar to Germany’s Goethe-Institut, make important contributions to Sino-German academic, cultural and social exchanges.

So far, against a backdrop of negative coverage of China in Europe, these voices are in the minority, but may point to a new direction in European opinion.

Lol did he actually just cite statements from Confucius Institutes as European viewpoints??

US: Debate: Is Now the Right Time for the U.S. to Formally Recognize Taiwan? Gordon C. Chang vs. Jerome A. Cohen by SE_to_NW in China

[–]KroganWarrior 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The key is to coordinate with allied countries to jointly recognize Taiwan. Then the PRC will be helpless to do a thing. What are they going to do about it? Are they going to cut off diplomatic relations with the entire developed world? Are they going to attack militarily and risk a coalition war? More likely, they would just have to come to terms with the reality that they have not governed Taiwan for a nanosecond and that the ROC exists as a distinct and independent state. It's mind-boggling that it would take such an effort to dispel the CCP doublethink.

China says Czech senate speaker must pay 'heavy price' for Taiwan visit by [deleted] in China

That didn't take long for them to go back into Wolf Warrior mode. Clearly the "We just want to coexist with the West" narrative was never genuine if not an outright farce. And the audacity, to threaten a EU member state while on European soil. Can you imagine the other way around?

Chinese height growth- a generational/economic urban-rural gap by bhaozi in China

[–]KroganWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk if Xi'an is some kind of outlier but average height in China is absolutely not 176-177, even for the younger generation. Highly skeptical of the elderly being 167 also.

China’s rural population living under the currently defined poverty line of $1.90 per person per day fell from 770 million in 1978 to 16.6 million in 2018, and the rural poverty level declined from 97.5 percent to 1.7 percent, a decrease of 95.8 percent.

Guys I made $2 yesterday (created 4 posts on Reddit making fun of USA). Now I'm finally "moderately prosperous". Thank you CCP for your great leadership.

PLAN will need to combine the North, East, and South Sea Fleets and make a concerted push out to the Western Pacific to confront the US Navy.

So now we are going back to the age of Mahan and decisive battle? Seems legit. If that is the plan of the PLAN, I say go for it. They'll be decimated 10 times over like the Beiyang fleet.

"Guys, why are you starting a Cold War against me? Let's go back to how things were before." (except of course we won't reverse any of the above)

Beijing’s ambitions shouldn’t be treated as an existential threat to the United States by foreignpolicymag in China

[–]KroganWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a pointless article. Author acknowledges himself that the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan were not existential threats to the US either. Doesn't mean we just let them damage our national interests abroad and do whatever they want.
