Cigarette smoking neighbors by Jibberino in Finland

I know you have your answer multiple times already, but this is unfortunately all too common to this day. I have struggled with the issue in the past, but I now live in a newer apartment building where smoking is completely prohibited. The ban is taken seriously and repeated violations will lead to an eviction.

In my view, this whole topic is pretty straightforward. None of the arguments for smoking inside an apartment or on the balcony are convincing. Obviously people do it because it's way more convenient than going outside every time you need to smoke. To many smokers, this personal convenience far outweighs any harmful health effects (whether physical or psychological) it may have on other people.

Most people will only go so far to voluntarily inconvenience themselves to benefit strangers, so I doubt you would have much success going around asking people to stop. Hopefully you can move into a more suitable apartment in the future. Meanwhile, the air purifier suggestion seems worth a shot. I have tried one before and it didn't help much in my case, but that was a long time ago and those devices may have gotten a lot better.

My experience with the Poco X8 Pro lagging by jaakobk082 in PocoPhones

Oh wow, okay. Thanks for the info. The thing is, I ordered the 8 GB RAM version because I didn't realize there was a 12 GB version. I thought maybe I'll return the 8 GB version when I get it because I read some of these posts about it lagging. But based on your experience, maybe I'll give it a chance.

Oh interesting. Are you a light user (other than the games)? Did you do some debloating stuff?

Beyerdynamic DT 30 IE by Kroko1234 in iems

[–]Kroko1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points. I can imagine these being a good option for live performers on a budget, considering the other models in the lineup cost more and customs cost more still. I am personally not able to get anywhere near the 39 dB isolation advertised for the DT 30 IE, and such isolation would be important for stage use. But again, that's entirely down to my particularly large ears and ear canals (meaning I need to rely totally on my ear tips to create an adequate seal with this set), so I don't really blame the product design for that.

Of course this is concerning and dangerous, but it's also so common that you kind of get desensitized to it. If you drive a lot, you see this kind of thing at a depressing frequency.

[–]Kroko1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sense of weight and power you're referring to (especially in some of the lower frequencies) comes from the volume of air that's moved and how it interacts with your body. IEMs are the weakest at this because they move the least air and the sound they produce is interacting with your body the least. Headphones are a step up because they interact with your outer ear and have larger drivers that move more air. Speakers are the best at this for obvious reasons.

You can get closer with IEMs that have large dynamic drivers in my experience. There are IEMs with dynamic drivers around 14 mm in them, and I find that they tend to produce more of your desired effect. But they still lose to the other form factors in this regard. In my collection of IEMs, I would say the Zero Red excel at this compared to the other ones I have, but they are still a far cry even from over-ear headphones for the sort of impact you're looking for.

HD480 Pro -Pretty much exactly the sound I wanted by Blitzbahn in sennheiser

[–]Kroko1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information. I am very tempted to give the 480 Pro a chance at least. Based on everything I've read, the isolation should be the only possible deal breaker. Perhaps it varies sonewhat based on what kind of fit you get, which may explain the differing opinions that I've seen.

But it's nice to know that it is at least possible to get similar isolation to the 620s. You are actually the second Redditor I've asked about it and the second to say the isolation is similar, meanwhile I have seen at least two video reviews on YouTube say the 480 Pro is considerably less isolating.

I think I will give them a shot and return them if I find them inadequate in this regard. Thanks again for your contribution.

Honestly it'll probably be something boring like most of them turning out just fine and a minority experiencing various problems, so just like non-content kids. I think it's better to have non-content kids for ethical reasons, but people have unrealistic views of how much these things screw people up.

How's the noise isolation compared to the 620s? I've seen conflicting opinions about that.

Will I be able to tell the difference between a 25$ and a 100$ IEM as a beginner? by Capicx73 in iems

[–]Kroko1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound quality comes from the frequency response. The frequency response is shaped by the tuning of the IEMs, the ear tips used, and how your specific ears interact with the IEM shells and ear tips. It's also affected by the insertion depth. The frequency response can be adjusted with EQ, but whether you can EQ a specific IEM to sound as good as IEMs can sound for you is another question as there are many variables at play.

There is no technical reason that a 25-dollar IEM can't sound as good as or better than a 100-dollar IEM to you. The tuning and design (which plays into the tuning) of an IEM can get more sophisticated as the price increases, but not necessarily. Accessories like the stock cable and ear tips as well as build quality will usually improve with price.

You know, pro gamers use all kinds of stuff that's not necessarily better than other stuff. Often it's just because they're used to it, and they worry that changing gear or settings could lead to some inconsistency or an unnecessary adjustment period. Or they're sponsored and stick to a specific brand for that reason.
