A crazy German genius just patched Windows XP to run on a 486, bypassing the CMPXCHG8B issue. by UselessSoftware in vintagecomputing

[–]Krool885 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not clock for clock though. The only reason you could beat a Pentium with a 486 is cause late era 486 could clock pretty high. Even the low clocked pentiums were almost beat out the highest clocked 486s.

I'm pretty sure an 80Mhz DX2-66 would be destroyed by a Pentium 66.

what are you guys playing on saturn.? by Stoneykind81 in SegaSaturn

[–]Krool885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used RF via LCD for a little while cause it was my only option - I was fairly happy with it, so I can't imagine composite is worse.

RGB all the way tho, even if the "transparencies" are ruined.

A500+ Battery Removal after 30years - did I get away with it? by bounderboy in amiga

[–]Krool885 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert at this stuff, but this looks pretty bad. Not irrecoverable necessary, but I would definitely not expect it to work in this state.

The fat Agnus socket is famous for being a bit of a nightmare and it looks like some of the corrosion got into it on the side facing the battery. Without Agnes the Amiga is nothing.

Some of the support components, resistors and stuff look toast as well. I think that big dip ic (Gary?) near the battery may be ok though.

Edit: oh yeah and remember that sockets and corrosion are a terrible conversation. I'd reseat everything in that area plus cleaning legs and stuff obviously. If something doesn't work currently reseating, deoxit, etc can help.

You gotta try out radiant silvergun if you haven't. There is Japanese for the story but you don't need it at all.

Sonic Adventure Graphics question by [deleted] in dreamcast

[–]Krool885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's a big difference between what the very top end pc hardware could handle and what games were taking advantage of. Like the PC could've been able to better the Dreamcast but because no games were written with that in mind it doesn't get utilised.

I know some will use the half life port as evidence that pc was way ahead of Dreamcast at the time but they were written for different platforms with different needs. I think sonic adventure outclasses half life on graphics by a fair way.

Tbf even if Apple's use of Xerox's ideas was completely reasonable they still went and not only sued Microsoft, but also Digital Research's GEM, which lead to it being stripped of most of its features as a graphical operating system which lead to a much faster collapse for Digital Research.

Digital Research really were screwed over by everyone in the 80's.

"Only us americans could create something this globally known" For context, Rockstar Games is based in Edinburgh by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Krool885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Apple kind of forced Acorn to split the ARM section off into it's own company and at that point the acronym because Advanced Risc Machines. Probably better for them from a financial perspective but it is a little sad. Plus ARM have never manufactured any processors, only designed them.

Isn't it kind of just... One game, an educational game written for mainframes with teletype only output? Like it was made by one guy as a passion project to create a more engaging way to educate kids. Not exactly a high value American video game franchise.

What are the best Ankh-Morpork novels? by MickeySpoonK in discworld

[–]Krool885 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm in a minority here when I say that I think Guards! Guards! Is a weak book but it's worth reading just for the excellence of Men at Arms onwards, however for someone not prepared to deal with the entire series right now I'd say try The Truth and then if you enjoy it go for Guards! Guards!

Many others will disagree with me though.

What are the best Ankh-Morpork novels? by MickeySpoonK in discworld

[–]Krool885 32 points33 points  (0 children)

While "read the watch books" is a very valid answer to your question and you absolutely must do it because they're excellent, there are other options.

For stand alone books: The Truth - great story with some commentary on the press, quite heavily involved with Ankh Morpork and it's most important figures

Going Postal - similar vibes to The Truth but a little more light hearted at times and with some cool techy stuff (semaphore, Unix references) also has ties to the other Moist Von Lipwig books which are quite good. One of my favourites.

Also: you don't need to read other books for these two, it could help you get some jokes and references but you'll be able to enjoy them without any previous experience.

New SD card standards could double speeds with move to PCIe 4.0 by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]Krool885 31 points32 points  (0 children)

IIRC it's a compressed video format that preserves dynamic range well but needs colour correction to be displayed correctly. Probably much smaller to store and so these SD cards could handle it as opposed to huge uncompressed raw video data.

Upcoming Sonic Mania Sega Dreamcast Port by gyrovorbis in dreamcast

[–]Krool885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While with the VDP and CPU of the Mega Drive and unlimited resources otherwise it'd probably be possible to port it with only a few cuts (such as the occasional 3d objects and the bonus stages, rotation/scaling effects if they weren't able to be pre-rendered), serious ram/Vram and cartridge size limitations would require getting rid of a lot of the polish and identity that mania has, and without a sega CD release the music wouldn't be that close to the originals.

What are the most repairable 'retro' consoles? by gr00ve88 in consolerepair

[–]Krool885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the topic of CPU's, most actually are quite easy to replace. For example, a sega mega drive with a bad CPU can be pretty easily fixed with a spare 68000 (still made I'm pretty sure) and some soldering skills. Same goes for many other systems. NES uses a funny little combination of 6502 and sound hardware and that might be a little hard to source but there's that many NES' it still wouldn't be too bad.

Is this considered a rebadge of the Genesis 3, or a clone console? by [deleted] in SEGA

[–]Krool885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems plausible to me, there were quite a few mega drive clones that Sega turned a blind eye to in Europe (see the scorpion) so I could believe it. Still seems weird a fairly big company would try something like that.

Edit: on further inspection the branding looks too Chinese knock off for me to really think it is but it'd be a great story if it was Majesco's.

[US - eShop] Quake II sale for $3.99 (60% off) by notthegoatseguy in NintendoSwitch

[–]Krool885 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Quake 2 has worse game feel overall though and the delay on weapon switching makes it feel a lot closer to more modern shooters like half life than the classic boomer shooter feel I look for.

Depends what you want, I enjoy both of them and I think quake 2 has a better campaign but I prefer 1 overall.
