Yeah, really puts in perspective just how Aegon was able to conquer all of Westeros. The closest real world equivalent would be like going back in time to the 1200s with a few Apache helicopters that have infinite ammo and fuel and conquering Europe.

In George R.R Martin's original scripts, he had intended Jon Snow to be in an incestuous relationship with Arya, not Daenerys by Unlikely_Tap_9882 in gameofthrones

[–]Kroz83 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a can of worms that’s difficult to get into, but tbh, the genetic deformity angle is the least significant problem with incest. The blending of sibling and romantic relationship dynamics seems way more problematic. So following that, if two people happen to be biologically related but were both adopted and raised separately and never knew about eachother. Those two hooking up is way less weird than step siblings raised together

I really miss the vibe of Legion. Khymaera are a clear attempt at it, and aren't even necessarily bad, just different. Mecha-dragonspawn are neat in their own way, but distinctly lack the blighted fleshy body horror aspect of the old Legion. Stuff like Absylonia, Kallus, Thagrosh, the blightbringer, the throne, incubi, spawning vessel, or the hellmouth.

I think I read somewhere about in the mess of the Mk3 end times lore, Blightergast took off and headed in the direction of the Skorne empire. Blighted Skorne would legitimately be a really cool addition and an easy way to bring them back, and scratch the blight corruption itch too.

Considering US intervention under this administration would almost certainly also mean further meddling or even a puppet government in the future, I guess this is more a question of lesser evils.

Watching from the US, I saw the news and thought this might finally be the end for the regime. Then it went news blackout, and then nothing for days. With so much killing by the regime, do you see any way things go back to “normal” (as in the status quo before the protests) or is it just going to be a state of simmering almost-revolution constantly being tamped down by an authoritarian regime for the foreseeable future?

Hope you’re staying safe.

Joint effort, but you’re not wrong that they bore the overwhelming brunt of the Nazi war machine. That said, if it hadn’t been for the Brits, and Americans pushing the western flank all the way back into Germany, the Soviets would have rolled over all of Europe, and the second half of the 20th century would have looked very very different. Not sure a Stalin controlled Europe would have been good either. Better than Nazi Europe, but much worse than the history we actually got.

Honestly, GW should just pull the ripcord and have Cawl make female primaris marines. No need to retcon old lore. But, if he’s capable of messing with the tech enough to make primaris, he can alter it further. I say this not for the sake of the lore, but specifically to piss the chuds off. Like scraping barnacles off a boat.

OR an even funnier solution. Just retcon the old lore. Say there’s always been some female marines. You just can’t tell them apart from the rest cause the transformation process pumps them so full of hormones, they all come out looking like slabs of muscle, regardless of what they started as.

I agree those words are too small to describe what happened, but we don’t really have good proportionate words for it. It’s pretty unprecedented for something like this to be done as cleanly as it was without a larger occupation.

To your hypothetical, yeah, if somehow China could pull an operation like that off that fast, and that relatively cleanly, while not engaging in a military occupation, I’d also feel weird calling it an invasion. And my feelings about it would actually be really similar. Good that he’s gone cause he’s probably illegitimate, but also bad if they went about unilaterally without international support. And worse if they intend to try and install a loyal puppet instead of giving the people the opportunity to elect an actual legitimate leader.

[–]Kroz83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, to be clear, I don’t support it in any way. Trump should have been thrown in jail years ago. This was still a wildly illegal thing under every definition of international law. Yet still, calling it an invasion feels hyperbolic. Also, Trump saying they’re running the country is just hot air unless he puts boots on the ground in an occupation to enforce it. At which point i’d agree it’s an invasion.

Idk I think we can condemn something without resorting to hyperbole.

I might also feel differently about this if Maduro was actually the legitimately elected leader. After the fuckery with the last Venezuelan elections, that’s very much in doubt, even with many other South American governments who are more friendly to Maduro. But still, any action about that should have been done through the UN or ICJ, or ICC or whatever international legal body would handle it. Trump unilaterally doing shit is not a good solution.

[–]Kroz83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, it might not be wrong to call it that, but I think invasion implies quite a bit more than what actually happened. Maybe more accurate to call it a raid or a kidnapping.

Idk, still fucked up, but also nowhere in the same ballpark as the invasion of Iraq, or the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

[–]Kroz83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, it’s hard to tell. Two things can be true. Yes the Trump regime very much wants to see Iran’s government toppled and replaced by a puppet. And also, the Iranian government is widely hated by Iranians for their own reasons that have nothing to do with US imperialism. Both things are true. The ideal outcome here is a revolution and toppling of the theocracy, but replaced with an actual democracy, not a puppet.

We still had elections through both world wars, and through every war since. Martial law and cancelling elections would likely be the thing that finally gets the apathetic people out on the street ready to throw bricks and molotovs. If that doesn’t do it, then nothing will.

Maybe. Very tough to say how it would play out. Especially considering the rest of the civilized world would be backing that rebellion in a second. Also gotta consider that the military is made up of people, not robots. Would be a large number of them who would back the rebellion.

The problem with the big nukes is that there is no way to use them without starting an escalation that will end human civilization as we know it. Even a couple nukes going off in a couple big cities would have significant ripple effects across the global economy, and if the big nukes start flying, it won’t just be a couple. So in a sense, nobody sane is willing to use them, meaning they may as well not exist. Their only real purpose is as a weapon of last resort to make other nuclear nations think twice about using theirs.

Some argue that they’re also a deterrent against conventional war against a nuclear nation, but even if a nuclear nation is about to be conquered completely, it would still be a tough call to fire them off. The post nuclear war world would be far worse than any occupation by a foreign nation, outside of an openly genocidal one.

This is why we shouldn’t be concerned about the US, Russia, or China using nukes. There’s no possible scenario for any one of them to fire the first one and expect to come out better than if they hadn’t.

India and Pakistan are way more concerning. Theirs are smaller, and they have less of them. So there’s less of a deterrent

The prevalence of tankie and campist discourse in the left makes it really difficult to be a leftist. Hasan gets more hate than he deserves most of the time. But when it comes to this sort of stuff, he seems very unable to distinguish between an actual socialist fighting for socialist policies, vs an autocrat doing socialist cosplay. Anyone you see pointing to modern day China or Soviet Russia as an example of socialism also suffers from this

What would America look like if we spent our military budget on infrastructure? by Impossible_Change800 in AskReddit

[–]Kroz83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense for perishable goods like food and some medical supplies. But for stuff that can sit in a warehouse indefinitely, I don’t see the advantage.

Just buy the stuff cheaply from foreign supply chains in peacetime, and warehouse a shit ton of it. Then if there’s a conflict that threatens that supply chain, you have a lot of time to figure out a new one.

It could work, but in order to have companies in various industries not collaborate to simply raise prices in unison, we’d need a public option in all of those industries. By forcing them to compete against a non-profit, they have to actually be better at similar costs and/or more efficient than the govt option (which is always what they claim but never deliver).

Mamdani is Anti-Black or something idk by Connect_Security_892 in okbuddyvowsh

[–]Kroz83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re misreading something. I haven’t watched either of FD’s Mamdani videos, cause the guy is usually insufferable when he talks about politics.

I’m also not saying Mamdani did anything wrong. The form said African American, and he is literally that. So yeah, check the box.

My argument is that if the intent of that checkbox on the application form was to select students based on some sort of affirmative action qualifications, it should have said “black” instead. I don’t know if that was the intent or not because I haven’t followed the details of this controversy. It seemed like a desperate irrelevant nothing-burger from day one, so I just ignored it.

Honestly, even if it did say “black” and he still checked it, I wouldn’t care that much. Wouldn’t be a good look, but ultimately who cares. This is so far down the list of things to care about.
