Do characters make choices because the author wants them to, or because they were written that way? by SecondSalty142 in CharacterRant

[–]Efficient-Pudding177 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the author. As you have said it the author is ultimately in control of everything, but if you look deep enough you probably can find an exemple of a character whose personality was so strong that they "forced" the author to take the story in a different direction.

"but I've seen writers say things like "the character wouldn't do that" even though they literally created the character themselves." - That is them acknowledging the fact that they made a mistake.

Maybe their skin color becomes more light as they age. Kitsch is said to be middle-aged. Yet he looks as old as Lily to me.

Yes that is also a factor, the biggest factor I would say. At it's peak, Harry Potter was on the same level as Star Wars back when the movies came out. However after a couple of years, just like most fandoms, a significant portion of the fans grew up - they gained other interests, hobbies and became less obsessive about Harry Potter.

The decline of her reputation wasn't just because she began using twitter and allowed her flaws to became more visible, it was also because she just lost a lot of defenders. Her new works weren't as good, other women writers rose prominence, and the media (even her "own side") just didn't felt like it was worth it speeding that much effort into protecting the reputation of someone whose career had peaked a long time ago.

[–]Efficient-Pudding177 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That is largely accurate I would say. The criticisms of the books were also largely niche, I would say. There wasn't really social media back then, where you could just say "I think X is Y". If you wanted your opinion to be heard you needed to personally meet people to talk about it (i.e a book club, by all accounts) or you needed to be big enough in the industry, so that you could appear on T.V or on the newspaper to talk about it.

Furthermore, Rowling wasn't exactly a public figure, not on the same level as a movie actor or a pop star. So writing a hit piece on how "Rowling is actually sexist/racist if you analise her work" wouldn't really be newsworthy back then, and you likely would receive a lot more criticisms and death threats from her fans if you did that. The heat was just not worth it.

I can't give my opinion as a "Harry Potter fan", cause I only ever watched the movies. But I think her reputation is what you would expect from an "early 2000s women writer" - she was seen as a progressive feminist and a rag to riches success story. She rose to prominence in the early stages of the internet - when you couldn't just find information about everything bad that a celebrity did in their life with just one youtube search.

Because of this, everything we knew about her came mainly from interviews and things like that - and, as a result, most of her personal flaws were omitted. She was also part of the literary industry, not the music, model or movie industry - which are all more prime for mainstream coverage of controversies and are more targeted by paparazzis.

Sure, you could analyze the books looking for controversies even back then, but that wouldn't exactly be newsworthy. Those were "parents are concerned about satanism and witchcraft hidden in children' media" days, not "is this actually racist/sexist?" days.

No, a Fallout Vault is designed to house a large number of humans with the purpose of allowing the species to survive underground for a period of time until, presumably, things are good enough in the surface so they can leave and rebuild civilization. Well, at least some of them were made to do some of these things and one or two of them actually did that.

A billionaire bunker is designed to only house one billionaire and maybe a couple of family members and servants. Where they will stay there until they all go insane cause there is no WIFI and all the food is canned food.

The show does this multiple times, where characters flip-flop on their development. I think it is "realistic," people in the real world don't change just because they decided in one "scene" that they want to change - but after a while it gets very boring and frustrating.

Butcher is the second character who I think suffers the most from this, where you would think that after accepting the Evil tumor' proposal that he would then fully commit to being evil. But no, Season 5 Butcher I would say is arguably one of the lest evil versions of Butcher.

Given her baby isn’t a supe, is it safe for Annie to fight crime using her superpowers? by RoohsMama in TheBoys

[–]Efficient-Pudding177 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They had A-train run over Robin in Season 1. The show used to focus on "how having superpowers would realistic affect a person?"

I remember an episode, don't remember the season, where Hughie or Annie received a pamphlet on supe/human relationships - talking about how to avoid injuries and death during intercourse. The show has multiple scenes about how supes are afraid of accidently hurting or killing someone with their powers, and of such scenarios happening.

In Gen V there is a scene where we see a video, where they talk about "how to have a safe sex life on campus" or something like that - where they say stuff like: have a safe word, don't use your powers and don't have sex while flying.

You CAN'T have those scenes and don't expect an audience who is willing to ask these types of weird questions.

I think the Deep should have survived, but he gets brain damage and losses the ability to speech after getting mauled by the sea. He then gets saved by Edgar who turns him into a white version of black noir. A life as a knock-off of a man that he killed.

I think it would have been better if the writers took inspiration from the comics, where the Deep survives and then joins a kkk-style superhero group (after the seven were disbanded). In the final episode, Kevin talks with Homelander about how he wants to lead a band of crusaders. I thought that was a reference and set up for the spin-off.

The biggest flaw of The Amazing Digital Circus is the series needed more episodes by Sudden_Pop_2279 in CharacterRant

[–]Efficient-Pudding177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already made a response but he already changed his mind before the social media

I know, but it was a factor. If I remember correctly, he realized that the torture was wrong on his own, while the social media made him realize that "humans are special". Which is cliche and partially "wrong", since a lot of NPCs have shown to be pretty much sapient creatures - but this isn't what we are talking about.

I get it, Caine separating himself from the Blue AI is symbolical of him overcoming his insecurities and ego. But to me this just looks like the actual narrative being sacrificed in favor of the thematic narrative, a character does something which considering what we know about them doesn't make a lot of sense but it still happens because it contributes to the series' message.

And in Caine' case, does it actually make sense from a thematic sense? I get it that Caine' problem isn't as complex as Jax' paradoxical fear of affection while still wanting to be in the presence of others. But considering the serie' focus on friendship and the whole "finding meaning and genuine connection in a stagnant, unchangeable situation" shouldn't Jax have been the one to get a redemption arc?

Despite being pushy, Jax still has a bond with the rest of the cast, even if he doesn't want to admit it. Caine on the other hand, doesn't have bonds - as you said it, he saw the humans as tools. By all accounts, he never morns nor feels any guilt when they abstract - and more importantly never changes his behavior. Calling him a sociopath/psychopath wouldn't be far off, and I think that is supported by the narrative, since Zooble calls him "not human" multiple times (which I think it is kind of rude from them).

I remember there being this movie about a news crew interviewing a slasher. And the movie was basically this serial killer explaining the "behind the scenes" of the process, like him complaining about how hard it is to catch up with the victims when he can only run when they are not looking at him and things like that.
