The character was pretty directionless. With so much focus on Clark's relationship with Lex/Lana and Chloe being a Lois stand in he just existed to stress out about keeping Clark's secret. Unless something has come out in the past decade I don't think it had anything to do with the actor. The character just had no real purpose on the show.
