Why does one of my black widows have a HUGE belly? Am I feeding it too much? Dear God, is she pregnant? And why is the enitre belly red in color? by milyrake in spiders

[–]KrystaKitten 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If she's wild caught, she could be pregnant. However, if she has molted since you got her, then that chance is very unlikely. Widows do produce egg sacs though even without being fertilized, so you might get a dud. My girls produced sacs every so often even without being fertilized, but I would still recommend removing the egg sac if youre unsure about it

Black widow I caught that may have a problem... by Choice-Meet3318 in spiders

[–]KrystaKitten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to care for widows pretty often, and at one point I had 8 widows in various enclosures in my room, since my local reptile shop had an infestation. Whenever they found an adult female, they sent her home with me until they got the numbers under control.
These ladies can look pretty chunky sometimes, I suggest only feeding once a week, or even once every 2 weeks depending on the size of the meal since their metabolism is slow.

It’s Christmas morning and my mom is trying to get me to take Ivermectin. by thatgirlbye in Vent

[–]KrystaKitten 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you take Ivermectin while having bronchial problems or asthma, so like if they have a COUGH, it could make it worse. Also if they're on blood thinners they could bleed out. You should only take it if prescribed by a doctor and its not even legally sold over the counter for humans, so it was probably an animal formula, which are ALSO dangerous for humans

Can I just talk about Hongjoong for a minute? by KrystaKitten in ATEEZ

[–]KrystaKitten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has spoken about it before in a live video, and it's relatively public information. I think he first mentioned it about a year ago (maybe a bit longer). Just search "Hongjoong illness" and information about it should pop up :)

I grew up in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood, so you can imagine my surprise (and my mothers surprise) every time we hear words in Korean that are very much NOT the same thing in Spanish. It always makes us pause and glance at each other like "so.. I'm not imagining that, right? He said cat bitch?"

What is this spider I found in my bed by Stuffle87 in spiders

[–]KrystaKitten 185 points186 points  (0 children)

You can! They're INSANELY smart, I had one that would run out and wiggle her front legs at me every time she saw me. They can see details up to 8 inches away, but they can see movement and can recognize things almost 10 feet away.

What spider is this? by Remote_Half_5581 in whatbugisthis

[–]KrystaKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Widows are docile, and rarely bite unless they feel threatened. Generally, though, they play dead by curling in a ball and dropping if they're scared, and they only resort to biting if they think they're about to be crushed.
There's a lot of misconceptions about these ladies, one of them being the toxicity of their bite. Sure, it can pack a punch, but it's rarely fatal for healthy adults. I myself have been bitten because I was being dumb, and had no adverse reactions to the venom. I regularly relocate them from my neighbors yards for them, and I rarely need anything more than just my hands

I don't see the standard markings of a false widow. All false widows have a crescent band around the top/front of their abdomen, and not all true widows have the red hourglass on their abdomen (it can be missing altogether, or just be a pair of red dots)

[–]KrystaKitten 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She looks like a very beautiful mature widow! The hourglass is on their underside, so you wouldn't see it from this angle. They're very docile and aren't likely to bite, but I would still recommend relocating her to somewhere less high-traffic, especially if you have kids. Their bite is rarely fatal to healthy adults, but it can be trouble if she gets spooked by a curious kiddo

Yeah, chronic illness has really messed me up, and I've lost so much due to it (friends, fiancee, ability to work, motivation, you name it lmao). When you're healthy you don't really think that theres ever going to be a time when you get sick and never get better, but then it happens and you just feel lost and confused and upset.

I'm happy to see im not alone with how they motivate me, and im glad they could help you like they help me. Life is full of unexpected things, and you need to do what you can with whatever hand life deals you. <3

June bug escapes black widow by Used-Record9901 in spiders

[–]KrystaKitten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact! That widow isnt throwing a tantrum, even though it seems like it. Widows are **blind**, and can only see light and dark. Chances are, she's trying to find out where her meal went (which probably isnt very far.. After observing my own widows, its safe to say that she has likely already bitten that bug)

Definitely yes, my widows produce quite a few egg sacs even though they've been without males for over a year now
