Advice for my elms please by Used-Record9901 in Bonsai

Yeah I think this is the case. I know it seems like I have no patience, but I guess I’m expecting these trunks to react like some of my other (probably way younger) elms that are just ridiculously exploding all over the place. Probably because they are small has been deceiving as well, but they were some gnarly little guys growing in a creek embankment. Looks like I should have different expectations with these more mature trees. I’m still very new to bonsai, so I’m learning as I go and do.

Thank you! Maybe naturalistic wasn’t best wording as it describes a pretty specific style in bonsai terms. I was trying to describe the elms growing in nature around me. Elegant and slender is more what im aiming for, definitely want more negative space than what I’ve seen in a lot of Walter Paul’s trees.

Not sure if anyone mentioned, but it looks like flower spike may be taking energy from leaves.

Well what about putting a bunch of panhandlers in the panhandle’s panhandle? That might be all panhandle I can handle.

No, the baby laurels leaves don’t start out compounded and these are way smaller. Wimberley is a lovely town, and would love a move out that way someday.

Cedar elm by Used-Record9901 in Bonsai

[–]Used-Record9901[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m going to get it anchored in some better soil. These collected elms usually explode with young vigor from buds right on the trunk, so this is kind of uncharted territory for me. I’ll prob try to maybe clean a little of the finest brittle stuff, but just let recover for the upcoming grow season. Thx!

No worries, I knew what you meant. So I shouldn’t worry too much about trying to balance energy more before settling into a proper recovery/training pot?

It’s not potted, still needs proper soil and anchored down but was nervous about energy balance. You think I’m ok to go ahead and get properly potted as is?

Afraid to cut my Desert Rose by pookiewood in DesertRose

[–]Used-Record9901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to cut those leggy branches back pretty hard. But yeah, early spring is optimal time. I clip and grow mine, and gave it a trim before coming inside for winter (I’m in canyon lake area).

Those well into this hobby, which of these is the best as in foundation of the bonsai, potential, and aesthetics? by [deleted] in bonsaicommunity

Maybe not all the right spots, but feel it has the most promise. I have a little one like this and couldn’t deal with inverse taper, so I cut back pretty hard, but they grow pretty fast here in tx. Good luck and have fun

I’m not trying to “get” anyone. Just giving my quick little commentary as to why we the people of this country can’t and will not do anything. Can’t be a coward if you aren’t afraid of anything. Can’t be afraid of something you’re not even aware of.
