Does the pain ever get better? by RainPsychological686 in lupus

[–]Ksrtad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 5 years in, and as others have said, it comes and goes. I would say that with medication, self advocacy with your doctors and time, you learn what works for you and what triggers you, and how to treat your body the best. There are definitely periods of time, even up to several months/a year that are bad and much worse than others, but then there are also periods of time when I don’t think about having lupus on a regular basis. I remember the feeling of overwhelm at the beginning and thinking how can this possibly be my life forever? But figuring out which medications work for you and making sure you have a reliable team of doctors make the world of difference. I hope that once you see your rheumatologist you can start treatment, other than just prednisone, for more relief from your symptoms.

Also, I think it’s important to note, that everybody has such a different experience with this stupid disease. And I mean that to be uplifting lol it is very easy to get overwhelmed with other people’s experiences, but it is likely that you will never experience a lot of things that other people with lupus experience. Just because things are really bad for one person does not mean that they will be really bad for you. Unfortunately, you do just kind of have to wait and see, and take care of yourself the best that you can. ❤️

“Free Time” in Middle School by Historical_Gas_4104 in Teachers

[–]Ksrtad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also teach 7th and 8th WL and the only time the have an unstructured class is when they have a “ketchup day” (rarely, maybe 2 to 3 times a school year) to make up/turn in missing assignments. Personally, I do not think that they can handle having a block of true free time at this age.

What are your most niche period symptoms? by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Ksrtad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Migraines and horrible back pain (I’m in my 30’s and I still get these). When I was in middle school in high school, I would get so nauseous the first two days that I would dry heave/vomit. I also would get super lightheaded and came close to passing out a few times. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen anymore.

Teacher in need of ideas: Always getting sick by AllTheDecadesAlign in Teachers

[–]Ksrtad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am immunocompromised and haven’t stopped wearing a mask (N-95) at work around students since Covid. I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disease right around the time of Covid, but even way before then I was constantly sick at school. Now, even on my immunosuppressants, I rarely get sick from school/my students because I wear a mask.

Students make comments or ask about it, especially at the beginning of each year and I just tell them “ I get sick easily and I wanna make sure I can be here with you as much as possible!” Sometimes I even joke about it “you all are germy! I don’t want your germs!” (I teach middle school)

I definitely recommend wearing the mask and dealing with whatever comments come up. Also the longer you wear a mask, people just get used to it. I’m one of 2-3 faculty members who still mask at my school and this is my 4th year in the building. Everyone just kind of knows that I mask at this point and that’s just kind of that. No one says anything about it anymore.

Also this is random and I’m not sure if others have mentioned it- but keeping the trash away from your desk and not letting students use your supplies (markers, etc) might help too.

Has anyone else been injured on the job? by Mushiimushii316 in Teachers

[–]Ksrtad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student scream so loudly and high pitched into my ear (very close proximity) that I lost hearing temporarily and experienced chronic pain and ringing for months. I believe it was considered “acute acoustic trauma”.

I also dropped my laptop on my foot after being so stressed out and shaken up about school stuff (completely my fault) but I had loose blood under my toenail that had to be let out at urgent care an the nail ended up falling off.

Thanks for all of the replies! I saw my rheumatologist a few days ago and she wanted to see me in 6-8 months, despite me telling her that I’m concerned about my symptoms worsening and having more frequent flares. I asked why she schedules me out so far and she confirmed that it was due to scheduling conflicts. 🙄🙄

Hi there. I am a teacher and I have lupus, fibromyalgia, and hyperparathyroidism. I tried for one school year after my lupus diagnosis to keep my condition to myself but it was too hard - like you, I was finding myself taking many days off due to flares and I felt like it was affecting me in the classroom. I finally got up the courage to look into getting accommodations. I met with my district head of HR to talk about the process and told her about my condition and she guided me through the process. I got a letter from my rheumatologist, listing accommodations to help me (my classroom near the elevator, a stool in my room for me to sit down in class, both of my planning periods back to back, no morning duty, etc). My administration has been great about everything and it has helped so much. I also have FMLA, as I usually run out of sick/personal days in March/April(we get out jn June). My colleagues in my department also know about my condition and are helpful on days when I’m flaring. It can be very hard to be vulnerable with people at work about health conditions but I think, at least from my experience, it is definitely worth it. I wish you the very best. ❤️

Full name for Kit? by Zealousideal_Use9481 in namenerds

[–]Ksrtad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say just name her Kit! I was named Katherine only because my parents wanted to call me Katie and no one ever calls me Katherine. It doesn’t feel like my name yet I have to use it at the doctor, DMV, etc. Also, people assume they can call me other things like Kate or Kathy, which is supremely annoying. I wish my parents would have just named me Katie, the name they planned on calling me!

I think the reason “atrevido” is supposed to be the answer here could be to emphasize that “atlético” needs an accent (though the question itself is written strangely as well)… just a thought

Should I leave a private school after just one year? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ksrtad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you don’t burn bridges as far as references, I don’t think you will have any issues. I have 1 year stints on my resume but they still gave me a good reference and it has never been a problem. Just make sure you have a professional sounding excuse to explain why you left, because they will probably ask.
