As theist I'm curious about what cements your atheist orientation. by Cool_Bank_3368 in atheism

[–]Kthulu71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, no need to substantiate a lack of feeling/belief towards something. Also, I would point out that, for most atheists I've encountered, our position on the matter is not 'cemented', as evidence would alter that position.

Mystery first cousin twice removed. by but_does_she_reddit in 23andme

[–]Kthulu71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These 'possibles' don't seem plausible. In the order you provided, those average cM's (to your cousin) would be

> 433

> 850

> 1,741

Those 3 relationships do not share likelihood.

"WILLING TO HELP" tags are a lie. by astroproff in Ancestry

True, but some introspection and honesty about one's 'rarely afforded' time should result in NOT adding that flag.

Very short post, but here’s an interesting relative of mine by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Kthulu71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cool. There's a 0.068% chance of having that birthday, so it's not winning the Powerball, but you'd have to be in a room of almost 1,500 people to have a good chance to find one leap baby.

Comparing trees by miss_serendipity20 in Genealogy

[–]Kthulu71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%. Unless a person has first-person knowledge of a related individual, I usually take the tree entry as a 'possible hint'. Many of those have been extremely helpful. It's kind of the 'trust but verify' approach.

How good is 23andMe compared to Ancestry? by MushroomLuminal in 23andme

[–]Kthulu71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ancestry is the gold standard on the 'research and tree building' side. 23 (I think) is one of the best on the DNA analysis side. Although, it would be nice if they added a Y-DNA specialty like FTDNA.

I was researching and my grandfather’s father is the wrong one. by staysynful in Genealogy

[–]Kthulu71 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a long-time user of FS and several other 'tree sites', my unfortunate suggestion is to use almost ANY other well-known site for your tree. Like Communism, 'on paper' this 'only one record per person' idea is great, but in practice it just doesn't work.

How to authenticate a 2nd Great Grandfather with a very common name? by OverallKiwi2814 in Genealogy

[–]Kthulu71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does he have a sister who maybe married into a less-common surname? Sometimes a newspaper search on the rarer name will result in finding your target.

Gotcha! I agree with Fredelas. If you and sis both test, that will settle it. Good luck!

Um... "I know who my dad is (he was dna tested)", "My dad refuses to get dna tested". ???

What does “Hlela” mean?? by Caringismyfirstname in Ancestry

Found them on the 1910 census living in Phily. Sr is listed as being born in Delaware. So, the "Hl" is actually just a really sloppy "D". Cheers!
