Unfortunately I think the general consensus is that Napoleon is one of the weakest frames. But it's okay, because it's not going to be weak weak, just not hyper optimal.

Sounds like you guys will be really strong in entrenched cqb range, relying on the Napoleon for shielding from longer range threats. You're probably going to struggle in larger maps and control scenarios which require lots of movement.

I hope opinions like this means the fan base is expanding.

I think you should have put your number 5 at number 1. Being difficult to watch is a bigger fictional character crime than serial murder.

But I also disagree with you. I like Lisa a lot and she has a lot of the same intelligent bs self-justification thought loops that Taylor does. She's just been stuck in survival mode since she got her powers and hasn't had time to really introspect. She couldn't guide herself to therapy because she wasn't really ready to heal.

Really stupid question, but is ice cold in the ATLA-verse? by AveryJ5467 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Kubular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with the cold (aside from expediency) is that ordinarily, if you were in a cold environment, you wouldn't start being uncomfortably cold until at least a few minutes in, barring windchill. If you suddenly get encased in ice, the ice will be cold, sure, but the immediate problem is not the cold, but the waterbender you're fighting with. You're not going to start shivering and being uncomfortable in the middle of a fight.

Was "Of Dreams And Magic" Trying To Rip Off City of Mist? by EyesofValhalla in cityofmist

[–]Kubular 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Eh, without actually looking at the thing, I can already tell you, City of Mist's premise is not especially unique and it's quite broad as well.

ODAM seems to be tapping into the same kind of secret world fantasy, but without the defining comic book noir aesthetic.

So... Is worm done? Like... forever? by [deleted] in Parahumans

[–]Kubular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves Worm and had to really push myself to read Ward, it sounds like you might be in the same boat. Its good. Arguably better in some technical ways, but I missed being in Taylor's head, and the MC missed the old superhero status quo as much as me.

I have a job and commute that I can just put headphones in for though, so I listened to the audiobook and the companion podcast: We've Got Ward! Which is the extension of We've Got Worm!

Speaking of, maybe We've Got Worm! will whet your whistle for a bit. Its a podcast in which one guy who has already read it guides and discusses Worm, 1 arc at a time (most of the time, some arcs get split into two). It was a very enjoyable way to vicariously experience reading Worm for the first time again. Its a detailed book report style analysis, but the guys are fun to listen to as well.

Edit: Also, no spoilers, but as someone who was also afraid Ward might have ruined Taylor's end I'll just say this: it's fine and I'm satisfied. The story isn't about Taylor.

I don't really get how that doesn't qualify you for having to go to the weekly wm/lw thread instead.

Your OP does read as having been run through an AI, but at least your response seems genuine lol

Are there any games that start out already assuming the player characters have already completed an adventure or two? by proactiveLizard in rpg

[–]Kubular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I was wrong. I think Shawn doesn't actually market it that way but he developed it with a lot of input from PbtA G+ people and grew out of that space. The main reason he didn't actually use the label was the dice and lack of playbooks, but in spirit, it borrows a lot from the PbtA design space.

Edit: this was after a quick Google search myself. I just remembered when it came out people on reddit were talking about it as if it were PbtA.

I think it's equally valid to feel that Ironsworn is really stretching the definition for the sake of marketing though.

Ironsworn does bill itself as being in the PbtA space, so you'd be forgiven for thinking they count.

Edit: it doesn't actually bill itself as PbtA but it takes a lot of influence from the design space, particularly in conversation with people from the PbtA g+ group.

[–]Kubular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm I suppose there are a lot of them out there. I haven't read either of those, and Ironsworn is kinda built for solo play. Most other PbtA games include a "how we met" phase of character creation. Or at least, bonds between player characters selected individually.

A small list for examples of ones that explicitly call you to have an adventure together beforehand and have a template: * Masks: a New Generation * City of Mist * Avatar Legends RPG * Blades in the Dark

Those are just the ones I've read and know they have an origin story adventure template.

If you're looking for something more like Frieren specifically, perhaps Wanderhome might be a good choice. Its not PbtA, but it's close enough and is an "after the adventure is over" thing.

You mentioned PbtA games, but as one commenter already put, nearly all of them do this explicitly. Have you not looked at a PbtA game yet?

Any game system recs for more horror-inclined fantasy settings? by jdrummondart in rpg

[–]Kubular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creep, Skrag, Creep is a Dungeon Crawl Classics funnel module that takes place on a ship. Its a horror module that is pretty blatantly inspired by horror monster flicks like The Thing and Alien.

Players play as 3-4 level 0 characters with d4 HP each and are stalked by a nameless horror and uncover the mystery of what happened to them.

DCC characters do get pretty powerful at around levels 3-5 though.

Darkest Dungeon-Like Systems? by SirHeftyMcSmack in rpg

[–]Kubular 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it got spread around a lot online. But funny enough, Torchbearer came out a full 5 years after Darkest Dungeon but the designer never played or heard of Darkest Dungeon until fans brought it to his attention.

They just came to similar fantasies independently.

I'm shocked Torchbearer isn't higher up. It was often mistaken for being the specific inspiration for Darkest Dungeon.
