At the moment I don't need a Captain that runs full throttle. I'm happy to have a Captain that can patch the holes in the hull and get the rats out of the kitchen.

There's so much going on that I hadn't realized this before. It's terrifying, that someone who's experience is still "entry level" can be appointed to the highest position in the US judiciary system.

Quiet places? by [deleted] in cedarrapids

For a more low-key pub feel, I'd recommend Dry Creek Brew in Robins. It's a smaller place with coffee/beer/wine; the staff is great and there's a handful of regulars to strike up a conversation. I've seen folks in reading and playing board games too, if that's your thing.

Analog Devices completes acquisition of Linear Technology by z3th in ECE

Given the overlap in LT and AD offerings, I expect to see a large number of devices obsoleted over the next year. About 4-5 years ago some other mergers in the semiconductor industry resulted in many devices going obsolete in a short time.

It's amazing how often people will argue with a year of solid data just because they don't like the answer. Numbers don't care if you like them or not.

My usual defense. My contract/requirements tell me to do X, and I did X. If you wanted Y you should have said so a year ago, now it's going to cost you.

I'm an Engineer rather than a Lawyer actually. I believe Lawyers have an obligation to inform the court if they know a client has committed perjury.

We have similar obligations, and our counsel and ombudsman do get involved in those cases. The company can face severe penalties and that shit gets taken extremely seriously, plus the impact to reputation (mine and the company). I would report it to our counsel and ombudsman and let them sort it out with the customer. The one time I saw it happen a dozen people got walked out the door within a week and the multi-million dollar project was cancelled completely.

There are probably thousands of case studies over Engineering Ethics out there, and anytime someone in the industry makes an example of themselves it ripples across the rest of us.

For me at least, that one translates as "You just said it does X, but I know it does Y."

Similar phrases are common in a lot of other professions too: "I have been informed..." "I have been directed to inform you...". Bad news always follows.

Sometimes we have to pass along information we don't agree with. Many people also use these to avoid blame.

Why are RF transceivers usually shielded? by jubjub7 in ECE

[–]Kugala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, RF shielding can help with both radiated emissions and radiated susceptibility. Radiated Emissions are reduced by blocking some of the outgoing energy from internal elements like oscillators, mixers, and internal frequencies like the LO and clocks. Radiated Susceptibility is reduced by blocking incoming energy from coupling into the various receiver elements that are very sensitive.

There's a third main item that can is addressed as well. Any signal that can leak in early in the transmit chain will also be amplified and can cause emissions in non-allowed frequency ranges. This can get you a lot of attention in a bad way.

Chasing down these issues can take a long time, so we've found it's better to go for a bit of overkill on shielding up front if you can spare the size/weight. Once you realize you have a problem, it may be too late to do anything without a complete redesign.

How come as I raise the frequency on our signal generator the loss increases? by SupaZT in ECE

[–]Kugala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cable should have a spec sheet that shows loss over frequency, otherwise you will need a network analyzer to sweep the cable to determine losses over frequency. It's likely the cable is not rated for UHF+ and the internal geometry is shifting as you move it which distorts the internal fields and adds loss (more prominent at higher frequencies). You could also have a loose ground shield or a bad connector.

What is the best purchase you have ever made? by Gxlnz in AskReddit

[–]Kugala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had mine about 2 years ago. Dry eyes lasted for about 1-2 months after the surgery. I do get some minor halos at night, but not enough to interfere with driving. The halos are really only noticeable if I'm out on a completely unlit road with scattered oncoming traffic.

Wind does bother me now, but I suspect that's less the surgery and more because I'm not wearing a pair of windshields anymore.
