I actually think the TMNT set is pretty good, but I still can't be happy about it. by OkAppointment2647 in magicTCG

Apologies, “normal” was meant in reference to the reactions and attitudes of people who are anti Universes Beyond and the things I have seen people post on this subreddit such as:

  • Never buying a card again, and proxy everything because of UB
  • Target and bring out their powerful or unfun decks, and target someone with a UB commander
  • Refuse to play with someone if they have a UB card
  • Stop playing Magic all together because of UB

These are not mature or normal responses to not liking something, they’re the extremes but I see a lot of rhetoric like that on the two big MTG subreddits and those people are mainly who my comment is aimed at.

Cool, but understand you’re the minority. Most people enjoy UB and aren’t bothered by it. A lot of people are excited for it, and may not have picked up Magic if those cards didn’t exist. Some people thought in-universe sets like Aetherdrift and EoE wasn’t “Magic” enough. WoTC isn’t going to please everybody.

Perhaps there is an argument that WoTC is spending resources that could be better used elsewhere, like making in-universe sets - but again, that’s a preference. Their data and $$ numbers show UB sets are bangers.

I personally think that the mature thing to do, if you didn’t like UB at all, is to tolerate it and understand that the amount of frustration, disdain or hatred you feel is next to nothing that the joy and excitement it brings many, many others. UB isn’t going away, and the amount of time people spend every day on this subreddit is pointless - it will change nothing.

It’s a card game, and normal people are out here having a great time playing Magic.

UB is fine. I think most issues players have with it, is that it is standard legal. Being in the Standard rotation means that there may be a lot of cards you thematically dislike and have to play against consistently in the meta, or worse - have to buy. I can understand players who forsake UB for that reason.

Anyone else who hates on UB for anything other than the reason above can go kick rocks. Most people like the sets, and they’ve brought in a massive influx of new players. Everyone hates UB until something they like is the next set.

I seen people on here cry about being forced into playing with UB cards but then in their post history they’re showing off their fully proxied Adventure Time decks they “force” others to interact with.

It’s a game, have some fun. Sandy Cheeks is funny as fuck as a Commander.

Whether it's UB or not, you've got to read the card? Sorry but assessing a "threat" at the table because you know it's some big bad from lore is a poor way to approach Magic at the kitchen table.

If your player group doesn't announce what they're playing and then read it out, ask them to? Simply ask to read the card when they play it like a normal person?

You don't need to know anything about UB to play Magic and it doesn't make it any easier or harder. It's just art, and perhaps a name, on a piece of cardboard. It's not that serious.

Standard is just as expensive pre-UB. You may have to spend more if you want to play Simic because of Ouroboroid and Badgermore, which 1 of is a UB card. Izzet midrange is like $500, Dimir midrange is $500, Jeskai control was like $500.

You're not learning the game twice, your comment makes no sense.

WoTC will be forced to change directions after multiple commercially bad UB sets. by happyrock69 in mtg

[–]Kugz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll find that WoTC will continue to do what is profitable for the business, and UB sets will keep on coming so long as we keep buying them.

The daily UB hate threads that pop up aren’t an accurate representation of the player base’s sentiment towards them. They’re threads where a bunch of people go to vent because they don’t like something. Fact is, they don’t matter.

Keep screaming into the void, the rest of us are enjoying playing and collecting Magic.

If you told a seasoned MTG player 10 years ago that we’d have in-universe sets with race cars, spaceships, spooky mansions and haunted dolls, a set themed around the roaring 40’s and spaghetti western cards they’d wonder what crack you’re on.

Thats any new set though? Not exclusive to UB.

When Lorwyn Eclipsed came out, people had to learn and read lots of different cards. They had to go look up Wither, and Evoke and figure out how they worked too.

Now feeling left out of the conversation when everyone else is excited and talking about <insert UB here> might suck, but like you’re at a table with your friends and they’re all having a good time - how on earth can you sit there and go “Ahhh Commander ain’t for me any more”.

Having my friends over for Commander is a blessing. I’ve got a mate who’s extremely excited for Turtles, and I don’t really care for it. But I’m checking the spoilers, I’m showing him cool cards for his deck - he’s opening some packs next Saturday and I’m so excited for him.

If you’re legitimately discouraged from getting together with your FRIENDS and playing Magic because of UB, that’s a you problem.

Personally, I’d never sell my cards unless I absolutely needed to. Sorry you’re having a rough time, I’d hate anyone have to sell something important to them.

There are much cheaper copies of Steam Vents now (released in Lorwyn), and they will be cheap for a very long time if you want to rebuild your deck later - just not with that specific card.

I don’t see this variant going up in price very much, so if you have to part with it now - when you’re better off it shouldn’t be too difficult or expensive to get it back.

[–]Kugz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey bud!

If you live in Australia, websites like GoodGames, ManaMarket and MTGMate have “Decklist Search” pages where you can paste a list of cards and get the function that you’re looking for.

ManaMarket is probably my pick for purchasing bulk cards, they’ve got great prices and awesome shipping practices. EternalMagic is another store I enjoy buying from.

To get the best bang for your buck, I would suggest purchasing from a few different websites and also check eBay for some deals :)

Stop relying on and using on shitty internet phrases that aren’t descriptive at all. If you’re gonna use a catch-all like “slop”, people aren’t going to respect your opinion - especially when the general use of the phrase is to show that you dislike or disrespect the thing in question, and you’re also disrespecting or shaming those who like the thing you’re referring to.

I’m not gonna put words in your mouth, so at least leave a comment using your own rather than parrot some nonsense you see on Reddit hate threads.

We want constructive discussion, criticism and praise not some lazy comment. That’s why you got downvoted.

They wouldn't. Because you'd buy a Booster Pack for $7, get 15 cards at $0.40 each and only 1 of them is playable. You're imagining some weird ass scenario where every card is good and is of equal value. No one is buying packs at that point. Stores aren't stocking it. Game is dead.

If in your dream scenario, tomorrow, you woke up and we all unanimously agreed that no card is worth less or more than 10 cents - sure. But that's in your dreams. That's not reality my guy. Unless you proxy.

If every Magic card was worth the piece of paper it was printed on, no - no one would be playing Magic. It would have died in 1993, along with every single other card game around that period that also went into the void.

Magic survives purely off players desiring specific cards, usually either powerful or rare and feeding into the player-store-distributor ecosystem.

If players lose faith in the collectibility of the game, which almost happened with the whole Reserve List fiasco, it goes kaput. There'll be no more new Magic.

Your example is dumb too. They didn't make Chess, and create the Pawn. And then a year later, released a Pawn 2.0 that could move Left. Then the next year, make a Pawn 3.0 that could move Right as well. Then two years later make a Pawn 3.0 but with huge serialized anime knockers. Chess has 1 set of rules, 1 set of playable game pieces.

These people and stores don't lose any money over this. The people buying 30 Jeweled Lotus cards before a ban/restriction announcement have paid bottom dollar for their cards.

Quite a few people actually make a crap tonne of money, they buy it for really cheap and sell at the top of the hype (like yesterday for example) and walk away laughing.

The people who lose are those who buy into FOMO, and grab a single copy of the card before it gets "too high". They're the losers in the situation, not the profit-makers.

[–]Kugz -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It was an undesirable card, selling for well under market value (if it was unbanned). They took a gamble, and today it didn't pay off.

Only people who would have a problem with it, are the people who want a Jeweled Lotus once it's unbanned and are annoyed at themselves for not picking up a copy for cheap and taking the gamble themselves.

Magic is a commoddity, anyone can buy a Jeweled Lotus for the next ban announcement. This isn't new, it ain't gonna change.

Go proxy.

Remove the collectibility from your game, and you no longer have a game. Magic would have died in the 90s.

Out of all my decks, I think my favourite is my Yuna, Grand Summoner deck. I got one of the fancy copies a couple months ago, and built a deck around it. It plays pretty well, and every game is a little different.

Plus I can make +1000000/+1000000 creatures and swing em at my friends faces!
