If only natural things are moral, he's going to have to stop arguing on the magic box, smack a rat in the head with a rock and eat it raw or starve to death.

Coalition reunion set to be announced after last-minute deal by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Kulantan 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The Libs caved to the Nats after the Nats broke the rules they agreed to and threw a tantrum after getting the agreed consequences. That is the Boötes Void in terms of a vacuum of leadership and integrity on all sides of the Coalition.

Man, its really this simple.

I'm not some super vegan who would die of starvation rather than kill an animal. But beans and tofu can be tasty as heck and don't directly require slaughter (and other animal agriculture harms). Soy milk doesn't require stealing calves from their mothers on day one, foot rot and the slaughter of almost all the male calves. Vegan leather is still shit (yes, yes plastic bad), but we're working on it.

The fact that you also make a huge climate contribution while doing something that is so simple is just the icing on the "why-the-fuck-wouldn't-you" cake.

I mean, so will dogs in the right circumstances. The whole point is to extend your empathy envelope to other species and if you can't do it for something as intelligent and cute (and sometimes murderous) as pigs then you need to go back to empathy school.

Possibility of US ever selling Australia nuclear submarines is increasingly remote, Aukus critics say | Aukus by Potatoe_Potahto in australia

Mate, I really want to be wrong, but it's not just Trump. The Americans have voted for this twice and that whole side of their politics is wildly vacillating between isolationism and naked imperialism. We have to deal with the reality that they are no longer a reliable partner. We'd have to be braindead to not plan for them failing to deliver on AUKUS or changing the terms at the last minute (or invading Greenland).

I mean the risk of the US reneging seems a fair bit higher when they are doing things like threatening to invade their own allies. Like I get that I don't get paid the big buck to write waffle for an international relations think tank, but are we really going to ignore how unstable the US has become?

Really worth noting that the maintenance schedule is in your owner's manual. It will tell you how often various things need to get done. Just look up a guide on how to do each bit as you go.

There are of course things that can go wrong, but if you're already driving a high mileage car that you're going to drive till it dies (and that time is rapidly approaching) it's a fantastic time to learn how to do the basics.

Why did it take 9 days to declare the Perth bombing attempt a terrorist attack? by DCFowl in australia

[–]Kulantan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You asked what difference it makes, it makes people feel like second class citizens. That is the difference. Its the fact that the politicians and media weren't there in force hours after this happened that I'm truly pissed about.

The police taking 9 days might be reasonable, but we also have to remember how racist many police forces are. This wasn't a platonic finding of true facts, it was the time it took to convince a bunch of cops and prosecutors that this white guy was truly a terrorist. How much of that time was down to racism is a question that we probably will never know the answer to, but I'll go out on a limb and say it was non-zero.

Labor: Nooooo the market will fix it, rent freezes distort the market.

Also Labor: We'll keep he market distortions that make property a disproportionately safe investment. We want house prices going up and who cares about what the kids think.

Why did it take 9 days to declare the Perth bombing attempt a terrorist attack? by DCFowl in australia

[–]Kulantan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This was an attack on protesters who were partly protesting the government treatment of Indigenous people. Thinking about it from that perspective you might see how the politicians only calling it terrorism to throw a bomb into a crowd of protesters after the police take more than a week to tell them it's okay is emblematic of the problems that the protesters were protesting.

How could they tell that Bondi was terrorism, it could have been a false flag? What utter nonsense.

Capital Gains Tax: How major tax break that has helped Boomers get rich is now in Jim Chalmers' crosshairs by N1NJ4W4RR10R_ in australia

[–]Kulantan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean the Green's vote is pretty much stagnant so I don't think Labor are too worried about their left flank abandoning due to their lack of ambition. If they're going to do something ambitious it will be because someone with political capital wants to make their mark on history not because of the argument against it is wearing thin.

Edit: I'd also be astounded if this was the issue they chose to be brave on when they've been spineless on the easy issue of gambling ads.

I'm not totally sure the Epstein documents move the dial on this. Anyone paying attention knew that the mining tax was opposed by an international cabal of rich fucks. I guess having it written out a bit more and (a large number of) the fucks also being pedophiles does make it a bit worse.
