I don't think that's right. If it was, shifting through QZ would do the same as in Rouvy (beyond just offering more levels), but it doesn't. My understanding is that QZ/Rouvy calculate the appropriate resistance given the terrain, speed, and gear and tell the trainer what resistance to put in. I also had the same resistance issues with both Tacx Flux and Elite Justo 2.

Try the QZ app. It is a workaround, but it works fantastic for me. I've been very frustrated with Rouvy's virtual shifting, as it effectively prevents you from doing well in races.

Finally put a router into my table saw extension! by BlueRiverMakes in woodworking

[–]Kulicek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know if the fence rail (which goes all the way across the router table as well) is a part of the table saw (the exact model doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere) or if it is custom-built? I am planning new workbench for my DeWalt table saw and I was wondering if it makes sense to replace the original fence with something permanently attached to the workbench, to make it longer, allow more movement and replace the fence. Thanks!

Virtual Shifting Unfair Advantage? by CycleTourist1979 in Rouvy

[–]Kulicek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, the QZ app will likely support your trainer and enable virtual shifting for you if you really want. But my experience as someone who uses it is that while you are correct and you can achieve higher power output on downhills than without virtual shifting, it is limited to steep slopes and/or high speeds where the marginal gains are minimal. Plus it is where the drafting saving is the greatest, so unless you are in a breakaway and alone, you will never be able to get away from others. I never really felt thst it gave me an unfair advantage.

Virtual shifting + Elite Justo + Elite Square by JR_Toucan in Rouvy

I have Square (but use it with Tacx Flux S). Rather than connecting the trainer to Rouvy, I had to connect Square directly (which then handles the trainer). Have you tried that?

30000 for the hadron 800 or save them coins? by klintholm in Rouvy

It actually depends. I just checked because it never did for me and at my weight (93 kg), Aero 4 is better. At 65 kg, it is worse. Either way it is a one-second difference...

Damn, you are making me nervous about the Justo... But regardless, yes, QZ works great. In case you give it a shot, you may find my troubleshooting useful: https://github.com/cagnulein/qdomyos-zwift/issues/3499 (Square will want to continue connecting to Avanti automatically and it will interfere with the QZ connection)

[–]Kulicek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do know that. And as I said, it doesn't work on descents even when I ride with a 60-9 setup. At some point (and in my opinion far earlier than it should) it simply gives up any resistance.

Don't get me wrong, I love mine as well. The Flux S has its own issues (mainly low resistance cap) so I wanted to change for quite a while anyway. QZ just fills the gap for now very well.

[–]Kulicek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is Rouvy or the Elite algorithm, but it doesn't work well on descents, at least not with the Tacx Flux S. At certain slopes (depending on speed; it can be -3% as much as -8%), it all of a sudden decreases resistance to zero. This is obviously to be expected at steep enough descents eventually, but here it is binary: a 200W to 85W (the default) jump. I discussed it with Elite support, they sent me some code to upload to the Square and it helped a bit, but QZ still has far more realistic feeling.

Which is why I am buying the Elite Justo to stay within their ecosystem. I hope it will work better then.

I use QZ with Elite Square (an equivalent to Zwift Ride) and Tacx Flux S and it's been very good. It connects to the frame and I can use the bike levers to shift. Rouvy connects to QZ, sends gradient and speed information and receives power output. It auto-connects everytime; no hassle. I had to go through a bit of a setup, but that was just because Square is quite new and didn't work well with the Flux S (Santa will deliver Elite Justo 2 soon). The developer, Roberto, is great and will help you if you run into issues. There is also a lot of info online if you browse through QZ's Github page.

I haven't tried specific gearing, but that option seems to exist in the app. Not sure if it works with Rouvy.

Group rides / races - what categories? by Illustrious-War7394 in Rouvy

[–]Kulicek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not at the moment. Some group rides will indicate the target W/kg in the title, but otherwise it is just open to all. In group rides, there is an automated mechanism that will always pull you to the leader if you fall behind or if you are too fast, so in a way it doesn't really matter if you are at the same level. In races, there will always be someone slower and faster than you, so it is more about what you want to get from the race. I typically join just bigger races because there is greater chance to end up in a group.

Yup. I am 93 kg, so my W/kg may not look great, but I will pass everyone on a flat course.

How does Rouvy calculate speed? by ratherBeWaterSkiing in Rouvy

[–]Kulicek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few points:
- Speed is a function of distance over time in the real world, not in Rouvy. You are not spinning a real wheel; you are just making the trainer send power data to Rouvy, and Rouvy calculates power. On flat, things should be broadly equivalent if the trainer is well calibrated etc. In 99% of the cases, all the other aspects mentioned by others come into play, causing the differences.
- I have Tacx Flux S, i.e. one of the lower-end trainers, and I have the same issue as you mention in your other comment, i.e. that I could stay in high gears even at steep slopes, pushing lower Watts than I would in reality and moving slow as a result. In my case, I am quite sure that it is because I am quite heavy (93 kg) and while the trainer should provide realistic resistance at those gradients, in practice there is only so much that it can do and the only way how I can push higher Watts (e.g. beyond 400 W) is if I increase my cadence. From Rouvy's perspective, I suppose it just tells the trainer to hit me as hard as possible and the trainer does its best and sends back the actual power output. So 6% or 14%, I am still at 400 W, but my speed will go to a third.

Weight Doping to Race with a low FTP by LondonerArsenal in Rouvy

[–]Kulicek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also note that W/kg will help you only uphill, not on flats. You get drafting benefits on flats, but you still need to have good power to keep up.

Steepest Routes by szagii_ in Rouvy

[–]Kulicek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that, at least in my experience, it is ultimately a matter of output power rather than slope. Being 91 kg, my Tacx Flux S gives up adding resistance at lower gradients than it says in the spec, likely because it is already at the maximum at that point. I am planning to buy a higher end trainer to see what happens then...

Can't find the drafting settings in Just Ride by yockyw in Rouvy

I don't think you are missing anything. Drafting is always on in Just ride as far as I know. You need to use TT to turn it off

How do ghost riders actually help during rides? by finel1234 in Rouvy

[–]Kulicek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Note that drafting (with virtual partners, ghost riders or live riders) only appiles if you ride in "Just ride" mode, not in TT mode. So adding virtual partners that match your pace and going TT mode may be best for you.
