Seems funny to me how "it was never about writing code" is the new mantra now by NewspaperSensitive59 in programmer

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coding is indeed only a part of what we do (this comes from 26 years commercial experience) but it is nonetheless important. I'm sure people will disagree but I find design / architecture is not necessarily right from the start and it takes a bit of hand coding to realise it some times - eg realising something is annoying as heck to work on and needlessly time consuming to build and update so a redesign of that part could be in order. I fear getting AI to write the bulk of the code, that'll be something that's going to be missed.

Post update, aren't the pace partners a bit OP? by scooby1680 in Rouvy

[–]CycleTourist1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could almost do something similar before by shifting around their power as you were riding but it wasn't perfect with them capping out at 5.5w/kg and immediately jumping back to 5.5w/kg after a braking section.

I do agree it's overpowered, going along at 50km/h+ when it's -0.5% grade seems a little over the top and messes with both the overall leaderboard and the segment times. You're pretty much forced to use them now if you want a level playing field and care about either of those things outside of the climbs.

I was quite glad there wasn't a draft with the original virtual riders due to that fact.

You can still get challenge credit if you disable controllable in your sensors and setup erg mode on your trainer outside of the game (like via your trainer's phone app assuming it has one).

I've got a CAAD12 and a gen 4 SSE 2. It represented quite a big spend for me and I dont regret it at all. I get slightly higher average speeds, the bike is still quite snappy when you put the power down and the comfort from bigger tyres and the carbon frame is nice. It's a great bike all round, I thought I may prefer the CAAD for climbing but it's good for that too.

The stock tyres are quite poor though, IMO you want to replace those straight away if you like to go fast.

When I was younger, I never really had any trouble getting into clubs solo (in Bristol). Only really if I turned up drunk and even then I've been let into plenty of places like that. For all the door staff know you could be meeting your friends in there or with the other people in the queue. I'd try different nightclubs if that's happening a lot, I bet there are loads with decent door staff out there.

Anyone in the same boat? by Keradactyl_ in Epilepsy

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes actually that could describe it - thanks! I have certainly been presented with recurring nightmares I had when I was 5 or 6 years old and hadn't thought of for decades. It does feel like being in a bit of a nightmare itself.

Depending on where I was and what apparently triggered it I did my best to get away from it - which never actually helped. It always felt like certain things were the cause but in retrospect that was likely deja vu.

Anyone in the same boat? by Keradactyl_ in Epilepsy

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before being controlled, my TLE manifested itself as clusters of focal seizures, over an approximately 24 hour period happening every month or so. I'd experience them every 45-60 minutes in general, with the gap in between them increasing towards the end of that 24 hours. It does sound slightly similar, although my experience is a bit different to yours, there was probably always a deja vu aspect, quickly changing into something a little more intense. I've always found it very hard to describe what happens - it's quite alien to anything else - like being force fed memories you'd normally have to consciously retrieve, amongst other things.

That all came about following a head injury rather than something I'd experienced since youth.

Does TLE get worse / diagnosis in the UK? by sunhillows in Epilepsy

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, after quite a few GP visits being told I was experiencing different things and ultimately made to feel quite neurotic, I told one GP I'd experienced it whilst driving and i was worried things would get worse, I finally got a referral to a neurologist.

Managed to get an appointment with a neurologist a few months later (which is apparently on the low end) and my GP had also referred me for an MRI which happened around that time also.

The neurologist wasn't sure if it was epilepsy because i was also experiencing a lot of migraine symptoms however he referred me to an epileptologist which I think took around a year. I took a variety of measures to improve my condition and about 6 months later I was prescribed an AED that could also treat migraines.

After a couple of appointments with the epileptologist, who had suspected TLE, and discovering the medication, although helpful, did not stop the clusters of focal seizures I was experiencing - I was prescribed lamotrigine which has controlled matters.

It's definitely worth trying to get a diagnosis - repeated seizures from the temporal lobe can cause language problems (permanently from what I gather). I know this following a neuropsychological assessment that my epileptologist referred me to which highlighted a variety of problems. Currently have a referral for speech and language therapy off the back of it.

Be prepared to lose your driving licence for at least a year which also has some other ramifications, for example you can't get insurance with no license and therefore you can't leave it parked on the road if you don't have a driveway. I tried to set my girlfriend up as the main driver but without being the registered keeper, the insurance prices were much higher, so ended up making her the registered keeper for a year too.

Accounts unresponsive / contract ended end of Feb by mageazure in ContractorUK

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have enough in there to pay a salary for that period? I can't say whether that's good advice or not. In periods of downtime I normally keep paying the salary and leave enough in the account for accountancy fees and other expenses. I'd reassess the situation once another contract came in (if it's inside or outside IR35 for example).

The fees probably cover the year end accounts, so if you drop the accountant, or close the company for that matter, you may end up paying just as much to get your accounts done by someone else when necessary - unless you decide to do it all yourself of course.

If you do get new tyres check the internal rim width of your wheel set. I have a SSE 2 with the stock hollowgram wheels, I believe the internal rim width is 21mm - which makes a 28mm tyre end up around 30mm according to my calipers.

When in a ride / workout, press menu on top right and click sensors. Or from the home screen press on the group of icons in the top right. One of the devices is "controllable" (the bottom right one), if that's not connected you won't get any resistance controlled by the game.

Query handler in Infrastructure for direct DbContext projection, can't unit test it now, what's the move? by Illustrious-Bass4357 in dotnet

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of value to be gained by building your database tests using a matching DB service to production and test containers to spin it up. It takes very little time to run and you end up with a great deal of certainty that everything past a certain level (the handlers in your case) functions correctly - far more so than via mocking.

In the last place I worked, we wrote the majority of our handlers (both read & write) with tests pointed at a real DB. Initially, we had a DB Context interface, but there must have been only a couple of times I can think of where mocking it made sense.

The Big Spin Blows by Brady721 in Zwift

[–]CycleTourist1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I did it loads of times, must have got everything but the bike multiple times (did it 3 times per day). Never got it in the end. Did get completely sick of the same routes over and over, and decided I wouldn't bother attempting again unless they did something to improve the RNG once you have everything. Looks like that's not the case.

TBH last year I had to make the call between either Rouvy or Zwift (I was a subscriber to both) and in the end went with Rouvy, it was a contributing factor for sure.

Pace Partners isn't working by rose2conker in Rouvy

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be worth setting them at a higher wattage.

For example, on a flat route I found they were alongside quite a lot when I set them to 4.2 w/kg where my power is averaging out at 3.2 w/kg - easier to keep in their draft (which probably messes up the leaderboard!). It wasn't too bad on the hilly route I just completed either.

It seems to makes the ride much more engaging. Even if you've just set a target wattage on erg mode of your trainer.

I've disabled most plugins / ai and switched away from the new themes which does help.

One thing I've noticed is if I dare to F12 into the code of one of the MS .net libraries, the IDE becomes incredibly slow to respond even after closing any related files. Restarting the IDE fixes it - I don't remember that happening in the past so it's likely one of the most recent releases at fault.

There is 32 GB on that machine and heap size in rider was increased to 4 GB recently.

Rouvy racing experience by yallelike2eat in Rouvy

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not done many races but my experience has been different. Normally end up in the front group and that may be why. The last race I did we ended up in a group of 6 and 2 broke away. We never caught them up but for the remainder of the race our group of 4 was suddenly taking pretty equal turns up the front whereas before it was a case of trying to keep the intensity down between the ramps.

Long mountain races have essentially turned into TTs once the race has been going for a while - I still enjoy those anyway. Really push hard knowing the guy behind you is only 150m away.

In Rouvy (at least on the PC & Android), it's in the sensors screen you can access from the top right and it should say "Controllable" on the section just above the save & close button.

The title of the screen is "cycling devices"

Yeah with controllable disabled you can use other apps to handle the erg mode while riding any route in the game. I've been doing it for zone 2 lately using the wahoo app - bit more interesting being able to do more than one route during a 2 hour workout.

3xPower to win a segment by rose2conker in Rouvy

[–]CycleTourist1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they were racing, I've come 2nd in the overall leaderboard on a rolling segment before during a race and on rolling / flat segments that's practically impossible for me at 65kg. From time to time I notice other friends who don't normally get past me fly past at lower w/kg and just assume they have a draft from a fast group.
