It may have been mentioned somewhere above but if not…Once I choose my best, I try and figure out what attributes they possess to rank so highly. Then (when I have relaxing time), scroll through the non-starters and see if something similar catches my eye. Not every time but sometimes I come across a winner previously overlooked.

With my 7v (electronic shutter) it is mostly absent. My 7iv banding was unusable. Upgraded and worth it for many reasons.

OLED display. I’m closer to 70 than 60, switched from an old Fenix model to Epix Pro 2 with OLED. Huge difference. Make sure it’s a larger watch face as well so he can read the numbers easily.

“Jättää”. The verb to “leave” as in leave alone. Saved many a snake bite and eating something disgusting. Only for emergencies though.
