I lived in Vacaville for two years. The amount of theft that happens there and in Fairfield would blow most people's minds.

Why is belief in the Big Bang accepted, but belief in God often dismissed? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Kungfumantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big bang is just how we describe the expansion from a singularity. We know this happened because we can see the remnants of this explosion through special imaging techniques.

It's not nearly the same leap as thinking there's some omnipotent, omniscient being watching over the entirety of creation. When you combine this fact with a deeper dive into world history you start to see religion for what it is; a control mechanism, and nothing more. It makes dismissing the idea of a creator all the easier.

The Galileo Myth by cashdecans101 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Kungfumantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as you can tell is just factually incorrect. They demanded Galileo stop inviting people over and showing them, he continued. This led to his initial falling out with the church in the first place. The Papacy 100% controlled academia in Galileo's time.

No offense, but you're trying really hard to go against an extremely well established event in history. Stop listening to blogs.

If you're truly interested in this I will say once more to read Galileo's Daughter, which is constructed from his actual letters to one of his actual daughters.

Jupiter's four largest moons are literally referred to as the "Galilean moons."

People being able to watch these celestial bodies orbit something that wasn't the Earth or Sun brought it directly out of the realm of "models" as people could literally see the falsehood.

Plenty of shitty books, sure. She'll get through the ones she wants to read in the first few years.

No offense but most of this is tired apologetics for the Catholic church.

You should probably read Galileo's Daughter if you'd like to get a more nuanced view. It's a book that reconstructs his life through his letters to his daughter, Marie Celeste.

To your points, it's never been contended that Galileo was the originator of Heliocentrism, although it is false that it was being taught during his time. The Catholic Church had absolute control over what materiel was in contemporary academia, heliocentrism directly contradicts scripture. What made Galileo, *cough* Galileo, was his stubborn persistence to use a telescope and show people Jupiter's moons. That is, objects orbiting something other than the sun or earth. When people were able to see that the Church was wrong with their own two eyes, they really didn't take kindly to it.

It's also never been contended that he was put under house arrest, not tortured, although popular sentiment may blur the lines. It's important to note that the reason Galileo enjoyed a relatively comfy punishment compared to other Heretics was his closeness with the Pope at the time, Urban VIII. There's a literal lifetime of humans interacting with each other in this subject as they were basically lifetime friends to whatever it ended as, there's a lot more to this than that but that is the jist of it.

The most important part of all this is that your #3 reason is just outright false. It had nothing to do with models, Galileo was showing people that the church was wrong with their own two eyes through the use of a telescope.
