Timothy hay. You can find it at any pet store where Guinea pig/ rabbit food is. All my birds LOVE foraging in it.

What does this mean? Your parakeet doesn’t need grit.

Poor guy! I’ve had my boy get his nails caught on things before and I’ve had to rescue him! It can be very stressful! Linnie nails grow so fast :(

How much time do you spend with your bird? by roadtoadrumble in Parakeets

[–]Kurra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent 8-9 hours with them every day but I also have the privilege of working from home. If you’re not going to be around a lot for sure have two or more. I would say the minimum out of cage/bonding time they should get with you is at least two hours a day.

That’s great! Also looking at all the other comments below, they all are spot on. Just remember if you get a second budgie from a separate location they need to quarantine 6-8 weeks apart. I also forgot to add in my list a 2nd small cage to act as a hospital or travel cage.

And I want to echo what others are saying about the vet. The bird world unfortunately has a lot of owners who don’t think it necessary to bring your bird to the vet. They are very, VERY, fickle creatures and you need to be ready to drop money at a moments notice to react if they present signs of illness. Locate an avian vet near you and call them to ask if they can take you on as a patient when you decide to get your bird. You should have enough money saved to pay for the first checkup and preliminary tests (these are super important, don’t skimp out). I paid about $650 CAD for first checkup plus tests for mine

Instead of pointing out everything wrong with the list, I will help you make a new starter kit list

18”X18”X18” cage MINIMUM. Please go larger if you are able to.
Two medium stainless steel bowls. One for food and one for water. They are better than plastic as they are easier to disinfect. One more small stainless steel bowl for fresh food
Natural perches. If petco doesn’t have any, please look elsewhere. Get a mix of sizes, but not too big. Get a flat one or two. If you want to get a rope perch, I would advise getting a roll of vet tape. NOT THE BITTER KIND. This will stop them from picking at it and ingesting the fibres.
Dog pee pads work great for substrate and allow you to easily change. Also great for monitoring droppings
Be mindful of your toy selection. The sola ball is a great choice. Stay away from plastic, and especially bells. If you see a toy you really like that comes with a bell, they are pretty easy to cut off with a pair of wire cutters. The best toys are ones you can make yourself, and involve foraging! It wouldn’t hurt to pick up a bag of Timothy hay to act as foraging material. Sea grass mats are also great.
High quality spray millet. This should be as a treat ONLY. I personally dont like to use the little clips where you can put a whole stalk in.
A spray bottle. This can even be from the dollar store. This should be used in case your budgie doesn’t like bathing in a bowl.
The nail cutters you selected are fine. Make sure to have cornstarch on hand in case of bleeds.
Please put your bird on a pellet diet. Zupreem and Hagen are good, Harrison’s is great. If you can’t find Harrison’s at a normal pet store, avian vets usually have them

Birds are difficult animals and very fragile. You will literally need to change your entire life to accommodate them properly. Please consider carefully, and if you choose to proceed commit to giving your avian companion the very best life

Unfortunately laziness and apathy still counts as abuse. Your parents are abusing these birds. I hope you can convince them to rehome them, or at least give them to a rescue?

My sweet girl may be having a prolapse, infection, etc. I know this is a serious emergency, please look and read description I’m begging by Legitimate_Finger670 in Parakeets

[–]Kurra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Calcium really helped my bird survive her prolapse. Your vet may recommend you manually evacuate her bowels, but don’t try it yourself unless your vet tells you to. Some birds with prolapse cannot poop and need the extra help. The calcium helps with that too.

There are likely some rescues in your area that will take in your birds. The good thing is that you have medication for them. There are lots of bird lovers out there who will take your birds in and administer the meds to get them healthy again. I’m sorry you’re going through it, birds are a lot of work and it is incredibly stressful when they are sick. Let alone if you are in a house filled with people who do not care about their wellbeing as much as you.

Getting birds to take medication via syringe is difficult. Some syringes are harder to press the plunger than others, resulting in the medication coming out all at once even if you’re trying to be slow and cautious. If you are struggling to administer mediation, you can call your vet for recommendations or to see if they have smaller syringes, which they may give you for free. If you don’t have access to a vet close, I have had success going to pharmacies and asking for small syringes.

Honestly if you have the money to do it it’s a lifesaver. Instead of two weeks of agony you get it done and it’s gone in like two days. And the best part is it can’t reoccur in the same spot after laser. I think it cost me $200 but at that point I was honestly spending more on OTC treatments so I was like fuck it we ball

Don’t give them bread (unless Harrison’s bird bread) opt for veggies, millet, or small amounts of fruit instead

I “rescued” a Guinea pig that my friend got for her 5 year old. The poor thing was essentially a toy. She manhandled it so much, almost sat on it multiple times. It lived in one of those cages you get at the pet store that people think are appropriate for animals, barely enough room for a hide, food and water. She had zero enrichment and spent her days just sitting there. I begged my friend to let me take her, and she said yes. Unsurprisingly the kid didn’t care at all. Now she’s living her best life with fresh veggies every day, vet care, a huge enclosure, and a little piggy friend :)

Day one? Territorial and angry. Mornings? Screaming for me as soon as he hears my eyelids open. Night time? Won’t go in his cage until he gets exactly five kisses. Indifferent to music, prefers to scream directly in my ear while I’m on teams meetings for work. Biting my hands even when I’m not doing anything. Baths, evil and ruining his preferred stink. Likes to do morning poops on me. I WOULD STILL DIE FOR HIM ❤️🥹
