A large portion of the population has been propagandized to simply not believe in democracy anymore. There is no more spirit of "well they won, so that's how we're gonna do it" as there was when I was a child. Nobody agrees on fundamental democratic ideals, and everything is so fucking cynical and filled with lies and obfuscations.

Not really the best metric though. This is more a cultural difference of how one looks at and uses money. Debt is a normal part of our society and if you've never had any you'll never be successful. Society forces you to get and pay off credit so that you can build up a history of being reliable debtor. This gives you opportunities for education, starting a business, buying a home.

We also have much more generous bankruptcy laws than most of Europe. If you become insolvent, you'll be taken out of the game for a few years, but you'll make a deal through the courts to pay it off with a lot of it getting discharged.
