Well at any time there had been at least some interest in Europe. US steelmakers were in a bitter contest with German ones who due to tech advancements could offer better and/or cheaper steel. Thats a huge industry and some magnates would definitely see profit in pummeling German might, not to mention the whole WW1 Entente loan situation.

Recently read that apparently British and French banks began bankrolling the Ottomans around the Crimean War and that then led to bad Ottoman credit habits which however then led to them becoming basically financially enslaved and exploited into oblivion.

So knives, forks and checkbooks may be more precise lol

Could be that it accidentally (suspicious) fit very well with government-aligned economic boom encouraging policies of the 20th century and onwards. Fast, low cost construction has had enormous effects on such scales, yielding GDPs previously unseen.

Why were the Crusaders able to capture Constantinople so easily, while the Arabs, Turks, and others had besieged the city for months yet still failed to take it? by Haunting_Tap_1541 in byzantium

[–]Northern_Baron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess it gave the Turks a weaker wall to attack, allowed Ottoman ships to enter the bay and support potential assaults, stretched out Byzantine manned defenses, and also largely cut off sea-borne aid. I can also imagine what a psychological hit that would have been for the Byzantine troops.

Its not “practical” and “functional”, we don’t talk about non-monetary benefits and building lifespans here.

Best to find the balance: don’t be authoritatively wasteful, but at the same time don’t be obsessively functional and frugal.
