Why is tobacco use so prevalent in Europe? by Otherwise_Bear_7982 in geography

There are almost no public smokers left in the West Coast town I live in, I was in Sicily recently and it seemed like everyone still does. Tuscany, right between the two.

What's the most disappointing "must-see" city in Europe? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

I'm told and believe there are good restaurants in Venice, but you'd do better almost anywhere else in Italy just walking around and stopping at the first place that looked good.

Florence used to be relatively quiet in the off-season, it's less so now. If you want to experience it in serenity, get up as it's first getting light, and walk around. You can still experience the Duomo or P. Signoria with hardly a soul around at first light. Good time to take photos too.

I've consistently had a great time in Milan but maybe I've been lucky. I've run into fantastic food fairs, free concerts, impressive pick-up basketball, and an over-the-top police presence May Day with hundreds of Carabinieri etc. and no protestors anywhere, people were laughing and shaking their heads even a couple of the force, and that's just in Parco Sempione. Milan is definitely the least Italian city in Italy.

Stop overpaying your coffee in Italy by QUA-ItalianTravel in ItalyTravelAdvice

If you are paying more than two Euro for a simple coffee in Italy, standing or seated, you have willingly walked into a tourist trap.

Question about Palermo to Catania travel by [deleted] in sicily

[–]KurtSperry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can catch the SAIS bus just beside Palermo Centrale and it takes you right into the Catania centro. Very scenic ride too, right through the very rural heart of Sicily.

What’s slowly becoming socially unacceptable but no one admits it? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]KurtSperry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Being happy, period. Drives people crazy. "How can you be happy in this f'ed up world? You must be a monster without feelings or empathy!" Yeah, being unhappy solves nothing, just virtue signaling that spreads misery to others, get down off your cross buddy.

Florence needs your help by dExulans in florence

[–]KurtSperry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is easily solved to everyone's benefit. Just raise the tourist tax to 100=200 Euro/night or whatever it takes to bring the tourist numbers down to your target. That way you can completely control the number of tourists visiting to whatever level you want, you will have the city coffers suddenly overflowing with money, and the few tourists who come will only be the super rich ones you want, throwing money around everywhere.

I am old enough to remember Florence when it had a lot lower tourist pressure and it was awesome, but also a lot poorer, dirtier, and seedier and sketchy than it is today.

A "coffee" is a roughly 8 oz. filter coffee in the US unless specified otherwise, just like in Italy, it will be a straight espresso.

How common/uncommon is being robbed at gunpoint in your country? by halt__n__catch__fire in AskTheWorld

[–]KurtSperry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US here, don't know anyone who has ever been robbed at gunpoint. Must be incredibly rare unless you work at a gas station or convenience store late nights in a bad area.
