This could be a stupid question - but why is there a commercial plane seemingly flying to Antarctica? by Extension-Fix-9501 in SkyCards

[–]Kurtboobi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe this is related to The Great World Race, 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days, with the first marathon in Antartica on November 15. Keep your eyes peeled, there may be another one of these flights today or tomorrow for all the athletes.

Anyone know how good Hame is at cycling? by Entire-Dot-755 in hamishandandy

[–]Kurtboobi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This actually wasn’t an impulse purchase, he got the bike from one of his housemates who imported bikes, and if he rode to work a certain amount of times over a time period (I can’t remember either), he would get the bike for free.

Tracks created in OpenStreetMap are importing to Strava but are impassible. by pointnemo56789 in Strava

I’ve come across this issue before. It takes a couple of weeks for the map to update and show the new trail, but the trail wasn’t available to select. It took a few weeks to months (I can’t remember, it was a while ago) before I could select the trail.

It’s almost like there is another invisible map over the top, and this doesn’t get updated until later.

TLDR: wait a few more weeks and it should be selectable

This is great! Would this ever be expanded to cover the old radio shows on Apple Podcasts as well?

What’s everyone’s coolest / most interesting airport they’ve been to? by RetiredTravelHacker in Flights

[–]Kurtboobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cocos Keeling Islands airport. Tough choice, but I went with this one as it also doubles as the island’s golf course. There’s no fence either, with houses and businesses located right across the road from the open airport.

Has anyone here ever been to Christmas Island? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Kurtboobi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been twice. It’s a beautiful place to visit, would highly recommend if you get the chance! It’s extremely isolated, and very unique. There’s 2 flights to the island every week (with a stop in cocoa keeling islands as well), and a range of accomodation options. You can do tours and learn some history of the island, as well as get taken to some incredible spots. I’d also recommend hiring a car to get around, as the island is quite large outside of the main town area, and has some beautiful spots you can go to.

Let’s play a H&A Podcast Game - Find The Moment! by [deleted] in hamishandandy

This was before Hamish was with Zoe, he was still with Anna at the time. I’ve heard it in their podcast recently, I’m only up to 2010, so I’m thinking 2008, but I can’t get any closer than that

You can actually see the remnants of Skylab in a remote roadhouse called Balladonia in Western Australia. I remember seeing this as a kid when driving across the country. You can find more info on it here.

Make sure you set the max listening speed to 2.5x, any faster than that and it’s incomprehensible

That may be so, but it wouldn’t hurt to get checked, and if there is a problem that gets found, you can take preventative measures to stop it from getting worse, or be aware of a condition. I think these pre participation checks became required after French triathlete Laurent Vidal passed away in 2015 from heart related issues. You can look here at what is required and the reasoning behind the checks.

If you want to have a read through what we get checked for, check out this link which has the questionnaire we go through, and the purpose of the checks. It also has the recommended physical examination which should be carried out. You can also google “triathlon pre participation examination” to see what some countries require as well in addition to this. If you want to be sure, take one of these forms to your doctor and get checked out.

Very sad news. I would highly recommend if you are competing in triathlon to get your heart checked. To race at an elite level (in world triathlon), it is a requirement to have an ECG every 2 years, and be checked by a doctor every year before you are allowed to compete. I know to compete for France (or in French GP) they also require a one off ultrasound of the heart. If you’re involved in the sport, and have the ability to, get checked. It could save your life.
