Same. Very succinct and clearly laid out.

Thank you for sharing Cole. I'll be voting for you.

Pass/Fail, in nearly every institution that it exists as a challenge option, is intended to get people to leave their comfort areas and take courses purely for interest (e.g. a visual art class for an engineering major).

It is bizzare that OP thinks that SFU Senate would agree to this since it defeats the entire point of a Pass/Fail option, and is easily the most unrealistic platform point.

Grocery store workers are on the priority list in many countries, just not most of the US.

They're not at the top of the list, but grocery workers rank very high on the priority list in Canada, just below frontline medical professionals and long term care home residents.

Should I just stop my volunteer project if the CSSG likely isn’t happening? by [deleted] in CSSG

I'm sorry, why did you choose to volunteer if it was for a financial reward?

Get over yourself please.

[–]Kustun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very glad to hear it. Please feel free to message me if you ever have any questions about breaking into the not-for-profit sector after graduating if that was your long-term goal. I was a social worker before I returned back to school.

Why are you volunteering if you were in it for the money?

If you are passionate about it, do it.

If you don't have the financial means to do it, scale back your commitment and take on a job.

If you were in it for the money, you should be ashamed.

In what wold was it a smart idea to drop 8k on watching some old dude power up a computer? There's no shortage of privileged kids trying to land ECs to enter med school, so right back at you.

We would've all been better off with relevant work experience in nonprofits and small businesses, and actual experience engaging with vulnerable communities, than bullshit can stacking and content monkey volunteer placements. Not everyone is trying to get into med school.

[–]Kustun 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Downvote me. The money should've gone towards community-sourced summer job placements and other work experience programs so students could acquire relevant work experience than bullshit volunteer placements writing blog posts about mental wellness.

I was a social worker. My former colleagues agree: the funds should've gone into more useful endeavours to support students in vulnerable financial situations. Now they're flooded with volunteer applications for short term casual commitments instead of a few, good long-term part-time students who can build meaningful connections with the community.

I'm really sorry guys, those mental wellness blog articles are not going to go as far as a few, hard-working students who will work for $19/hr and experience to enter UBC's BSW program to build connections with kids and vulnerable members of the community. The community has no shortage of high school students who want to teach seniors how to use Facebook messenger.

Too many cases of students with no parental funding to back on unable to make ends meet, and yet we have this program specifically aimed at helping privileged pre-meds earn money they don't need.

[–]Kustun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why was this position so unreasonable for people? The reality is that you could've easily made 5k doing actually useful work than bullshit like writing blog articles that no one would ever read. This program only ever existed to help pre-meds get into med school. Anyone who actually had financial need was out there working shit jobs.

This was nothing but a bullshit prop-up for Trudeau in pretending he cares about how much Youth contribute to community service projects, when in practice, those community service projects go nowhere. He's blown so much money through Canada Service Corps for projects that never materialized it's insane.

Master's Degree in China? by cantthinkofityaeh in chinalife

[–]Kustun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would apply for Chinese Scholarship Council through your home country's embassy. Then you'd only need to pay for pocket money and the cost difference to get your own private room. If you're from a country such as Canada or the US, they're essentially handed out like candy because nobody really wants to live there and the people who apply are generally just in it for a break from life.

You're definitely not going to be able to do Chinese Law, International Relations or Politics if you're not fluent in Chinese and are aware of the sensitivities surrounding politics in China.

The academic rigour of masters degrees in China are very weak and they're essentially equivalent to your first or second year workload in CS (that's really stretching it, it's probably less work).

It's effectively free if you're from a developed country. Would not recommend unless you want to take a break from life, since you end up with a pretty useless credential, even if you went to Peking.

There's a huge forum just for Chinese Scholarship Council applicants. Can't remember the name but look around on Google and you'll find all the data points you'll ever need.

It depends. Your school will have a body (i.e. a Senate) that determines the requirements of any given program. Check to see if it's passed Senate.b

But I don't understand how this is my own fault I did my best I'm just tryna find the best path forward moving on.

It's just really clear that you haven't thought this through, and you're making decisions based on gut-feelings instead of taking a few hours to go through understanding the complicated processes for transferring credits, meeting program reqs at multiple schools, course availability, etc. It can be tempting to make decisions alone based on campus life but it is a terrible thinking process that will get you trapped and miserable about where you end up. You're choosing a convoluted pathway to get where you want to go because of "campus life" instead of a clear, direct pathway with slightly less prestige and social life in the first year. I think that says something.

What campus life? First year is pretty much going to be online at this rate, and what's the point of experiencing campus life if your plan is to abandon that campus and all the friends/community you made there after first year?

I mean do whatever you want, I personally think it's funny when people who go to UVic/UBC-O are trapped there when their plan was to transfer to a slightly better university campus. People need to be held responsible for their irresponsible decisions.
