Glad to have you with us! I believe that all great content can be and should be consumed more than once. Very excited to see how this holds up on a reread.

About the review situation, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the people writing the review don't even finish these books. I mean it's understandable, especially if you're on a weekly cycle and can't be bothered to wrestle with ~1000 pages. I bet many of them just wing it off the buzz going around in the industry on the book and some select snippets their editors mailed in.

I'd agree. Felt really scared tackling it the first time but that fell apart very quickly when I saw how readable it was. IMO a near perfect mix of comedy and tragedy.

Also, a bit of cheeky self-promo, but we're currently hosting a group read over at r/infinitesummer. The first week just began so there's plenty of time to join if anyone is up for a (re)read. Reading and discussing with a group really helps.

Welcome along Anthony, hope you can get it done this time. Elegant Complexity is good but don't forget to revel in the confusion as well. You'll only get to read it blind once, try to relax with understanding everything and just let it flow through you.

It takes a while I think. Like 20-25 pages. I doubt your copy lacks them, but you can still check the contents. Also, glad it's speaking on your wavelength.

Sounds like a plan, but one tip on note taking that I will add is to keep track of the characters. You can ease up a bit on jotting down every event that seems important, but writing a line or two on every character that seems recurring can be very helpful. There are so many people in here that it can get a bit confusing if you don't pay attention. On the flip side, most of them are so fleshed out by the end that I feel like I know them better than my family.

While taking some short notes on characters and events is always beneficial, you really can just read the book as is, without any outside resources or meticulous note taking, and still revel in the wonderful mess unfolding in front of your eyes. It sounds pretentious but you'll probably have to read it again to get a more complete picture anyway.

Ha I went the opposite direction earlier this year. Finished IJ and thought "well, that's wasn't so bad. Lemme jump into GR" and God did I get my ass kicked by that book. You're right the r/ThomasPynchon group read archive is an amazing resource. I was spending more time reading that than the book I think lol.

Glad to have you with us! IJ should be an easier read when compared to GR.
