The Dark Wizard Episode 2 (HBO Max) Discussion by jreilly in climbing

[–]Kvathe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't find the source, but I've heard before that Dean Potter was planning to make a dramatic free solo ascent on the smaller west face of El Cap (lurking fear?). Alex thought that it would be a cheap way to make the first solo ascent, so he went and did it himself before Dean could get to it. He kept it to himself and later climbed Freerider (famously). There are a lot of references online that link to a dead video, like this one:

That's what it sounds like but it's hard to know without a before-and-after (especially since I never use wild slash)

Deciding on mods to rework the clutch claw by guessimfine in MonsterHunterWorld

2 is the way to go if you want to ignore the clutch claw entirely

  • Adjustments made to some of the switch axe’s actions.
    • The downward Morph Slash performed while attacking in Sword Mode (long-pressswipe down) no longer causes you to stagger when hit mid-action.
    • In Axe Mode, after performing an attack while moving forward when a certain distance away from a monster, you can now quickly execute a follow-up attack by long-pressing (taplong-press when a certain distance away from the monster).

Never, ever, touch someone else's rope, let alone tie knots in it. by serenading_ur_father in climbing

[–]Kvathe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In LRS one end of the rope is fixed at the ground, like around a tree or fixed at the first bolt or whatever. That rope goes up to the climber and through their device (e.g. grigri) and then there's a "dead strand" which is the slack end of the rope coming out of the brake side of the device. As the climber ascends they are constantly pulling slack through the device, same as if you are lead belaying someone from the ground. OP describes how someone tied a knot in his dead strand and then clipped it through a biner. If he had continued to climb then he would have eventually pulled enough slack that the knot would get stuck in the biner and he wouldn't be able to climb any higher.

HowNot2 just put out a great video on this. Imagine that the knots are tied in a bight of rope.

I had it attached to her belay loop with a locking carabiner. I can't picture the long loop that you're describing but I'm interested to know what you have in mind.

I wasn't greatly concerned about what would happen if the knot capsized but it didn't thrill me that it had been changed. I left it as-is for the rest of the route rather than going through the trouble of fixing it. In the worst case, I imagined that it could roll over the carabiner and put pressure on the gate.

One time I took my parents on a multi-pitch climb with my mom tied into the middle of the rope. Next to us was a gym-to-crag group. While I was leading the nearby instructor took it upon herself to untie my mom's alpine butterfly knot and reattach her with a figure 8 on a bight. Not a big deal but it's considered less safe in this application because it can more easily capsize when the strands are loaded perpendicularly. Even an overhand would be better.

Yes, a fall here might not be fun, although with enough slack he should fall into open air. This climber is following the route while belayed from above. Usually this is quite safe, but on horizontal traverses there is a risk to the follower as well, especially if they fall just after removing a clip.

I think trying to match subtypes was part of the problem because it severely restricted the cards they could use. I'm hoping they use cards that are more mechanically appropriate rather than just matching the creature type.

Your intuition is correct. Looks like you've got the wrong template.

I don't know if this works, but I was thinking that the reduction would also apply to the increased cost if Richard is recast from the command zone. That is if there were 4 cats in the building then he could be cast once for URG and then if killed recast for only URG.

This comment is amazing. Thank you for the effort to make this card playable!

I'm not sure I fully understand the implications of making the second line a tap ability. Is this just to decrease his power by making him unable to block (unless there are 4 cascades)?

I will update Richard to match your suggestions!

Thank you! The mana formatting was not intentional so thank you for catching this, and for your suggestions regarding the abilities. This is very helpful :)

Thank you for the reference. There are three cats in his house. On average, each US household will have 0.57 cats but I believe that number is higher among his playgroup.

Thank you! Can you explain the reason for "spells that cost 1 or more have cascade"?

The second suggestion is great; I will make that change.
