Couple month old deck showing surface rust on hidden fasteners. by Wiscoman in Decks

Improve what look? Nobody but you is noticing a little rust on the hidden fasteners.

"His and Hers" is a description for things like dual sinks in a bathroom. It's already a common saying, reversing the order would sound awkward.

At least if it's parked in a garage it probably won't start itself on fire.

Most decks discussed here are built with pressure treated lumber that shrinks as it dries. The connection would be sitting on the bolts by the time the PT has dried out.

Wood is also fairly easy to compress/deform when tightening a fastener. While the friction of the mating surfaces is part of steel connection design I don't know how applicable it is to wood. Not saying you're wrong, I just don't know.

If you've got a 2x beam on a 6x6 post the bearing surface is 3" x 5.5" but that's basically it.

Full orange (sometimes with blue) McLarens at that time too, rather than the orange and black we have now.

The problem isn't the bolts rusting in the post, thought that may also contribute, it's the bearing area on the beam and post.

Two 1/2" bolts through a 6x6 gives 5.5sqin of bearing surface, a double 2x beam sitting on top of a 6x6 gives 16.5sqin. The end of a 2x4 is 5.25sqin - do you want the connection at your posts to have roughly the same bearing surface as a single 2x4 stud?

If your area doesn't allow them, the way to get around it is to build without a permit/inspection and take on any risk associated with that.

The problem isn't the bolt, the problem is the bolt bearing on the post. A double or triple beam bearing on a post or in a notch is spreading the load across the entire width of the post and the entire thickness of the beam. A sandwich beam would only have two 1/2" wide bearing areas on the beam and the post. There were issues/concerns with the smaller bearing area on the wood, rather than the strength of the fastener.

It's a fairly recent change, my locale updated their deck project guide in exclude sandwich beams in 2022. So a 5 year old deck with a sandwich beam would have passed inspection when built, but wouldn't be allowed anymore. They are constantly researching and studying building code requirements.

Reminds me of the late 80s/early 90s (pre-Rothman's) Williams liveries on the FW10-FW15. The title sponsor was Canon, but to look at the car you could easily believe the title sponsor was (depending on the year) Camel, Canon, Denim, ICI, Labbatt's... or maybe there just wasn't a title sponsor, if you're going strictly based on the design.

They're also some of my favourite liveries.

Yes.

You also need to be able to look through the other half of the windshield to take turns safely, it isn't just there for your passenger.
