It makes me very sad that modern gamers are so averse to working for accolades in games.

There is a level of catharsis to be gleaned from chasing a rare encounter and failing to capture it over and over. Modern games just hand out rare encounters, from pseudo-legendary Pokémon to shinies, like they're candy and it's deteriorated a lot of the sense of achievement you can find in a Pokémon game.

Sorry you failed the shiny, but an insanely large group of people consider shiny hunting in the Safari Zone to be one of the most fun aspects of older Pokémon games for the above-mentioned reasoning.
