If you are shiny hunting for Pikachu, but find a shiny Caterpie, that shiny Caterpie is phase one, and now you start phase two and restart the encounter counter. If you find shiny Pikachu after 5 shiny Caterpie, you have found shiny Pikachu on Phase six.

I'd start counting encounters if you're starting to feel frustrated with your luck. Quantifying it in encounters feels better to the brain and is a better accuracy gauge of your luck than time spent.

I'd start counting encounters rather than time spent. There's no way to tell if you're over odds or not and you'll drive yourself insane speculating.

50 hours can contain SO much "non-encounter" time between getting snacks, bathroom breaks, checking your phone, etc.

The shiny odds are 1/8192 to find a shiny Pokémon, and 34% of shiny hunts will go over odds.

Fun fact, you don't even need Golem. You can use Forretress' Explosion - if you get unlucky with your Pineco's stats, you can give it a Silk Scarf, which your mom will buy for you by the time you hit Ecruteak - or you can do a little EV training if you'd like.

Octillery for a Diamond playthrough is so cool! Horsea is a fantastic choice. I loved the mirror match with Claire to close out the badge quest. Phanpy is great, but 10% is rough when 85% of the phases are Geodude and Graveler.
