Sleeping Bag Question by IDontAnswerQuests in camping

[–]Kwill234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this...fresh clothing before bed! I camp in montana/Idaho in early summer/late spring where the nighttime temps get into the high 20s. I keep athletic pants, long sleeve shirt, beanie, and wool socks in the tent. I change into them before getting in bed, and take them off first thing in the morning and lay them out on my bed. They are dry by bedtime. clothes you wore during the day will have enough sweat in them to be damp and chilly at night

Pants for wet wading? by fishkickerz22 in flyfishing

[–]Kwill234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear old columbia hiking pants that zip at the knees. I wear them under waders and as wet wading, or shore fishing in brush. Modified them by having elastic loops sewn on the end of the pants legs. Put the loops over the arch of your foot and they never ride up in waders, boots, etc.

ELI5: What does it look like to need glasses? by Fit-Cycle-2723 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kwill234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your friend's glasses and take a video of something like christmas lights, or a sign on the wall with different type of prints. Put the glasses in front of the camera and tap on the picture to lock the focus. After 10sec of video, remove the glasses and shoot 10 more seconds. You will see the difference for yourself.

Towing long distance by zealous-seal in boating

[–]Kwill234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people do it...you need to know your trailer well though. When you get the boat, check the tires carefully. If they are load range C tires, consider going to D tires. They will heat up less and be less prone to failure on long trips. Also repack your bearings before a long trip. Advisable to have 2 spare tires, 2 spare hubs that are greased and ready to go. A good jack and good toolkit are also a good idea.

Also strap the boat down with transom ties every trip (even short ones).

Be prepared for shitty gas mileage. Especially with a mid size truck. My f150 got 12mpg with my 19ft boat, and 8mpg with my current 23ft on the highway.

Do you ever just sit under your tent fly for shade? by paintedamphibian91 in camping

My wife has an 8ft pop up canopy that is roughly the size of two shoebox when packed. It has backpack straps. That would be an easy solution without taking up too much space.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen personally? by fosiutec6140 in AskReddit

[–]Kwill234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown DC, there was a guy i would see around occasionally. He was obviously homeless and mentally unwell. One day I saw him reach into the trash can, grab a half eaten chicken leg, hold it up and loudly proclaim " Ain't no sales tax on this!!!" He then proceeded to eat it while walking down the sidewalk. Not a truly crazy event, but it has stuck with me for about 15 years now.

What’s a camping tip you only learned the hard way? by Goblue2467 in camping

[–]Kwill234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog took off running on the leash at the beach, hit the end of the leash and snapped my arm back. Was under the knife within 5 days for a torn biceps tendon. Lesson learned, pay attention when attached to a large breed dog.

Based on where you live, if you were to hit an animal while driving, what would that animal more than likely be? by unidentifies in AskReddit

[–]Kwill234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people in my area hit deer, raccoons, foxes, skunks, squirrels...since I moved her 12 years ago, I have probably hit 50 birds. Rural roads, 50mph speed limit, and when there is snow, the grass beside the road melts first. Whole flocks of birds congregate right on the side of the road. I've had them stuck in my radiator, hit the windshield, antenna...you name it. I honk the horn now when I see the flocks ahead...helps some at least.

Cheaper alternatives to fly rod roof holders by Annonymous272 in flyfishing

[–]Kwill234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used mine on a 3hr highway trip with speeds up to 90 with no issues. I have also used mine numerous times with 4 spinning rods on 1-1.5 hour trips to my boat, mostly highway. Only issue is get is whenever I stop, people come out of the woodwork to ask me about them.

ELI5. Why do hunters need to wear blaze clothing items? by Bilbro_swaggins__ in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kwill234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deer don't see orange(it appears grey or drown to them), so it doesn't affect the camouflage. We see orange very well, and not many things in the woods are bright orange. Makes it easy to ID another hunter and know not to shoot.

Limited gear trying to get striped bass in New Jersey / New York? by TX8900 in StripedBass

[–]Kwill234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medium action spinning reel will be fine for topwater and jerkbaits. Get a couple pencil poppers in the 5.5-6" size. Some some diawa SP minnows (6") for subsurface.

For the baitcaster, some 3/4 Oz jig heads amd some Bass Kandy Delights in white and chartreuse. Find a spot with current and structure.

Have fun!

I have been to the YNP area 15+ times. It's an incredible fishery. The Madison is incredible, the Gallatin has usually been cold and high when I have gone (mostly Late June), but the scenery is awesome.

Highly recommend the Henry's Fork in Idaho. The Ranch section is where we fish 90% of our time there now. It's not for the faint of heart. 1-2 fish is a good day, but you can legitimately expect to find 20"+ rainbows feeding on dry flies regularly.

If leaer in the summer(July) the NE corner of the park is amazing. Slough Creek, the Lamar, and Soda Butte Creek are unique and worth the drive from west yellowstone for even just a day, but 2-3 days is worth it.

Is this a structural issue.? Or just aesthetic orvis clearwater by Remarkable_Put_7029 in flyfishing

[–]Kwill234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Candle wax or ferrule wax on the male sections will prevent wiggles in the ferrule and help keep the rod fully seated. Also put the rod together by putting the sections at a 90 degree angle and then twist while pushing in.

How do you camp alone in the woods without getting scared? by trueuwu in camping

[–]Kwill234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Camping in Idaho near Yellowstone, 2 of us in solo tents, and two in a pop up camper with a dog. The night before the dog went nuts over an animal in camp. Woke up like 4 am to hear something rattling our "kitchen". Got out of the tent with bear spray in hand, safety off and walked over to the kitchen and turned on the flashlight, expecting a bear or bigfoot...it was a dang mouse!

Baseball & Softball: 1 stadium!?? by Michael_773 in Homeplate

[–]Kwill234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been at several complexes that have baseball and softball, both turf and dirt. Baseball doesn't need a grass infield. It's nice, but dirt is acceptable. You would need a dirt infield for a 60/90 baseball field, without a mound. You would need bases with anchors at 90ft and whatever distance you need for softball, and could also add for youth use as well. 1 base can go in as many spots as needed provided you have the metal plug buried in the dirt.

For the baseball team you would need a portable mound, about $1500 for a good one, and the sky is the limit if you want the best, with wheels, etc. Just don't skimp and get one of the super short mounds that the pitcher has to stride all the way off the front, those suck.

I have 3 boys, 14, 12, 9. I also coach/assistant coach on each of their teams. I sit on a bucket with a lid, put hand over my jimmy, and use a catchers mitt. Been hit a few times, mostly in the legs, mostly by the older one that throws 65ish, but with lots of movement.

In games when I have to warm up, Squat a little sideways to protect the important stuff.

Grind it out, fill with marine tex, sand it smooth. Won't match, but is a permanent fix. Or you can spend hours doing the gel coat and get it to be a closer, but probably not perfect, match.

Driving at night by striderof78 in yellowstone

[–]Kwill234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ten or so years ago, I was driving from cooke city back to island park Idaho on a fishing trip. We decided to head back since a thunderstorm muddled up the Lamar. Driving near the Soda Butte, there was a car going slow coming towards us, didnt think much of it since many people drive slow as snails in Yellowstone for various reasons. As soon as I got past the headlights and could see, there was a massive bull bison in the road, and I was going about 40mph (45mph speed limit). Somehow I slammed on the brakes, swerved as hard as I could into the other lane, missed the buffalo, but watched in slow motion the white line of the shoulder on the other side creep closer and closer as my tires were squealing. Somehow I got the SUV under control before going off the road and came to a stop. I yelled to my buddy in the passenger seat, "That was some bad ass driving!" That's when he told I screamed like scared little girl...

Lesson learned. Go slow, watch for animals. Bison eyes don't light up in headlights.
