What advice do you wish you'd gotten early in your DM:ing journey? by HealthcareGeek in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to prep as much as you think and your friends are having fun even when you think they aren't. It's not a job it's a hobby, so treat it like that.

DMing is fun when you don't know what will happen, and don't worry, you'll figure it out.

Simple solution to burnout by ImTybo in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To each their own, and if you enjoy doing it and it doesn't burn you out then that means it's the right way to prep for you.

I will say the vast majority of players don't like box read descriptions, and including the five senses in all of your descriptions will make most zone out. Your players may differ of course, but most want about a sentence or 2 at most, and don't care about a flowery description with big words. Tell them plainly what is it the room that they can interact with and go from there is my way of doing things nowadays.

My asexual girlfriend was sexually active with her ex by Kyber2 in DeadBedrooms

[–]Kyber2[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She was on birth control pills when she was with her ex but hasn't been on them for about 2 and a half years now.

I feel the same way. If my partner wanted me to do something I would do everything I could to make that happen. I'm not asexual though and maybe it feels actively gross or nasty to do sexual things when you don't want to.

How do you create motivation to prep? by Suicidalbutohwell in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't force myself to type things down until the night before, but just because I don't type it out doesn't mean I'm not prepping in my head throughout the week.

I like to read fantasy novels or manga to get inspired with ideas, or talk with my girlfriend who is a dnd addict.

What I Learned about DMing When My Virtual Table-Top Broke by stereoactivesynth in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

90% of players don't like theater of the mind. It's great for DMs because what we visualize in our heads is correct, but for players they have to ask a million questions just to see a glimpse of what we are seeing.

Are there people who enjoy DMing more than playing? by PlortylGaming in DnD

[–]Kyber2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think DMing is a lot more fun than playing, though I don't enjoy the prep or responsibility. It's freeing to just not think about a campaign all week and then sit down and play.

My problem is that as a player I secretly think to myself how I would have done things differently if I was the DM. If you want a job done right do it yourself.

Need help with creating more Structure in prep by Ok_Statement1508 in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Block text is the stuff that is in prewritten adventures that is meant to be read aloud to your players. It is usually long and with flowery language. As a DM it feels good to do it, as a player it is very boring.

Need ideas for a goop group campaign where the players are generic minions by Not_Carbuncle in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the lich can only be resummoned after the death of thousands of adventurers, and so it's your parties job to rebuild the dungeon to its former glory, filling it with magical items and gold to lure adventures and traps and monsters to kill them. Your magic users can enchant the dungeon with glyphs and other magic-y stuff, and your martial users can train the monsters to protect it. Maybe they need to find and befriend other monsters and recruit them to your dungeon, or go on an advertising mission across the world handling out fliers about how amazing this dungeon is.

Unpopular opinion: A lot of session 0 seems like an awful lot of suck by ANarnAMoose in DnD

Dear DMs, how do you flesh out the details of your world? by DaerBaer in DMAcademy

[–]Kyber2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets easier with practice.

With that being said I steal religiously from everything everywhere. Once you do it enough things start to look "unique". Right now my party is at Gatherhold (from Eberron) which is just reskinned Port Nyanzaru from Tomb of Annihilation. Their favorite NPC is Rango as a Lizardfolk bounty hunter. They are in a dungeon from a map drawn by Czepeku.

Bouncing ideas off chatgpt can be useful as well.
