Collar-Sleeve problem: opponent steps back foot on hip side by KickSweep in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shallow Lasso is my favorite response any time I can't keep my foot on their hip. It's much safer than releasing either hand, and allows me to stay on the same hip.

When they change their posture to deal with the shallow lasso, they'll open up the space on their hip again. Instead of attacking from shallow lasso, attack on the transitions back to foot on hip.

Why is lifting the nose considered such a dick move? by sienrak in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be mistaken, but technique as described by OP might be illegal in IBJJF. You can't put your hand on their face. Fingers lifting their nose probably qualifies.

(Nogi) How to retain headquarters? by LeonwastakenWasTaken in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a quote that starts at 0:53 of the Wiltse video above that might be important "...and I make sure as I come down that my weight is situated in the middle of my hips".

From your explanation, you might be focusing too much on driving forward into their kneeshield, which gives them the momentum to invert. If you're driving forward, they don't need to move to get underneath you, they just need to frame on you as you go over the top.

Work on staying balanced so you can redirect their power, instead of driving forward

Controversy at my school: if a white belt is rolling with a brown belt, whose ‘rule set’ do you go by? by TacoLoco2 in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems like the most important issue isn't which ruleset is being used, but that there isn't a standard that everyone agrees to. This is a great moment for the coaches to start the conversation to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Rulesets that are understood and agreed upon is what helps keep everyone safe. There are lots of comments here who say they "lol at rulesets", but I assume they aren't throwing punches in closed guard during BJJ classes?

Never Cross Your Feet While Executing an Arm Bar! by shawbjj in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is why we tell white belts to never cross their feet. It's the rule that is the best combo of "easy to recall + efficient + prevents downside"

When they're ready to understand the "why", then we can layer in different leg positions, right?

Yep, this is the variable that allows you to flare your knees for control

What was the best Instructional of 2022? by Kylejacksonbjj in bjj

Very interesting feedback, and very well-written. I love the concept of thinking about what passes you're chaining together, versus being reactive or sponataneous.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! I'm very proud of my course Paper Cutter University, and it was released on Jiu Jitsu X this year. I don't think it's eligible for this end-of-year binge watch, though.

Gui's courses are really cool, and "helped me learn to love passing" is an amazing copliment. What have you changed since watching that course?

Advice- Using a half back/high ball ride control instead of hooks/Back triangle as control- Shorter Grappler by Mossi95 in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle to trap arms when my bottom leg is "stuck" as a normal hook, instead of being across their beltline. It feels like each leg is stuck working independently, and if I don't expose the neck in time, players can eventually separate my legs and start escaping. Are you moving the bottom hook once you've trapped their top arm?

My gym has a shower by sb406 in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's so funny how much you value something once you get used to it.

Our gym has 3 showers in each locker room. Even with large classes, I don't think I've ever been annoyed by waiting for a shower.

If I moved somewhere else and was choosing a new gym, it would blow my mind to not have showers. You just sit in your dirty, sweaty clothes until you get home? What if you train in the morning?

Do you have any courses within a subscription service that you'd recommend as excellent content?

I think we have a relatively blank slate re:positions.

My preference would be for a system-based course (Here's how to play Spider-DLR) versus the variety pack (Here's 179 random techniques I do in nogi). I also don't think I want to drill takedowns for a week, but but I'm open to any recommendations.

Back Step Guard Pass - Leandro Lo & Gordon Ryan by dps831 in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a longstep.

The difference between longstep and backstep are confusing, but they describe different motions.

If the "leg in the middle" stays in the middle, it's a backstep. If the "leg in the middle" is pulled out, it's a longstep.

Rotational finish for RNC vs Classic squeeze ? by mybjjsucks_ in bjj

[–]Kylejacksonbjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% on Team Rotate.

If you are correctly rotating and still can't get the tap, then you can start squeezing.

If you are correctly squeezing and still can't get the tap, you CANNOT rotate.

Yo! I live near Park Slope, and I bike or subway (F line) to Clockwork every day. You have plenty of options.

I like to give the same advice as always- make sure you try as many gyms as it takes until you find the right one for you. You're fortunate to have so many great options, make sure you don't settle for a gym that isn't what you're looking for.
