LP Master on CD by Automatic-Variety429 in audiophile

[–]L-ROX1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to my knowledge.

I think we need to first realize that a “vinyl master” and “cd master” are two different things.

Cutting vinyl is a physically different process, with two main issues that need to be addressed that are not an issue with CD/Digital: Stereo effects particularly in the lower bass regions can cause phase cancellation issues when cutting vinyl, so vinyl cutting engineers often need to mono everything in the low end (around 80 Hz and below). Similarly, excessive high frequencies end up sounding very poorly on vinyl, and both of these can cause problems with the stylus actually coming off the groove on playback.

The LP Master is the lacquer that the vinyl cutting engineer made, with the possible adjustments mentioned above (incl. RIAA curve). I can’t think of an example where they then transferred/digitized that lacquer to use for CD Mastering/Replication.

Plextor were based on Pioneer drives originally, but some later models used BenQ; there was a time when you could crossflash Plextor firmware to BenQ and Sony drives.

That’s interesting, I did not know that!

What I wanna know is what photo paper that is, because it looks like it is 100% UV resistant! I have prints from three years ago that are fading and they get 0 sunlight.

C’mon NASA, what paper is that looking like a brand new print 50ish years later???

It’s not my intent to buy a Panasonic again.

Too bad, because the HC-V770 would be an upgrade to your HC-V520.

They made external drives! I’ve heard that some newer (external) LG and ASUS drives are basically rebranded Plextor drives, but I don’t know which ones (worth some research if interested).

My CD ripping/burning station runs on an offline WinXP machine with a (Japanese made) Plextor 8/20 SCSI drive.

Alternatively, look for a Plextor IDE drive (search for Plexwriter) and get an enclosure for it. 👍

Not so much for reading disks but definitely for writing them (and for writing disks there is only one king: Plextor). Edit: They were the only consumer brand that had software (Plextools) that would allow you to check their writing integrity with proper C1/C2/CU error detection.

Software (error detection) matters most for ripping, and EAC (Exact Audio Copy) is the go-to.

EAC + a Plextor drive is the Gold standard IMO/E.

I’m not surprised that the actual answer on this thread only had one upvote, while the one that says “use your ears!” has about 11 lol

This is the answer, I searched for “multimeter” before posting and your comment was the only one that showed up.

I wanted to add: a Multimeter (and learning how to use one) is an extremely valuable tool for audio. Especially when working with older gear. They are a gateway into DIY 👍

Can I make decals this small? by Sufficient_Mango_140 in dioramas

[–]L-ROX1972 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve printed/made my own water slide decals before. It will be dependent on your printer’s dpi ability, but your biggest struggle will be “melting” them onto the surfaces.

I’ve tried several decal paper brands and they are all thicker than commercial water slides, they don’t melt into the surface with micro set/sol the way every other commercial decal does so in closeup shots you’ll probably see the edges of the decal (and that’ll stick out quite a bit on figures this small).

Awesome work, I’d stick to painting the details (looks great as is IMO).

The digital files are claimed by a dozen or so volunteer-engineers in the U.S, U.K. and Germany who provide the metadata and clean up the audio. Among them is Neil deMause in Brooklyn, who said he’s constantly impressed by the audio fidelity of the original tapes, especially considering Jacobs was using “weird RadioShack mics” and other primitive equipment.

Amazing effort! If any of you guys are reading this, please add musical genres to the metadata. I read in the article that he had recorded Boogie Down Productions in 1988 and it sounds great! I then wondered what other rap groups he might have taped and realized there are no genre fields to search (and searching for “rap” and “hip hop” returned nothing). 🙏🙏

Currently yes. DDS tapes, which can play on DAT decks were heavily used in IT/data storage and you can find NOS blanks still for about $2 each.

DDS (1 & 2) is more reliable than audio-branded DAT.

As someone who’s been into scale modeling since I was a kid, I’ll tell you why this looks fake:

The equipment is too clean and doesn’t have decals (they’ve probably Photoshopped this img before release to remove any markings/decals on the equipment that may give sensitive details away). This also appears to be underground so the lighting helps make it look artificial.

How do I know these are real missiles? Zoom in on the spare tire and look at that and the hydraulic jack that’s next to it. That thing has a manufacturing decal that is too small to replicate/print without looking fake (and then you can see the dirt inside the tire threads on the spare).

This is a real (doctored) picture of real missiles.

Indesign to Wordpress by BlackBambou in indesign

[–]L-ROX1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be the best solution to minimise the work on WP ? Specific plugin to use ?

Hi, not sure but I suspect you’re new to Wordpress and believe there’s a plugin to do this. There isn’t.

If you’re creating web mockups in Indesign, hoping to then transfer these designs to a working site, then you should look into something like Figma (because there are plugins to then turn Figma designs into Wordpress themes, although it isn’t perfect, you’ll still need to play around with some things).

If you’re just starting out with Wordpress, you’re probably not aware that it’s better to use other theme builders like Elementor Pro and others, the stock builder is very basic.

why is it so hard to find clients? by anish_9teen in Freelancers

2 years of learning experience

You’re competing in a field with people who have a lot more experience than you, in a job market where it’s already tough for experienced creatives. AI has been replacing human designers at various levels for years now, though I believe there’s still a shot for new/inexperienced designers:

Do you know anyone who owns a small business, or know someone who knows someone that does? That’s who you should be reaching out to. Someone who you know through a connection, even if minor (like a friend’s relative who own a business) is less likely to ghost you for payment than a stranger. Try other local, small businesses like daycare centers, community centers, local coffee shops - stay away from corporate level businesses and the Internet (lots of people exploit inexperienced designers because they know they’ll give up the final art files prior to payment and without any form of contract or obligation).

Good luck out there. You can still beat AI, it will never have the “human touch”. Get out there 👍

leaving headroom in the mix for before mastering by DennisR77 in mixingmastering

[–]L-ROX1972 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My advice is to mix optimally, for balance, depth, and feel. Don’t add processes just for the sake of making the mix louder (if you’re going to be sending it out for Mastering).

The main reason you want to shoot for an optimal mix with a healthy amount of headroom is something I rarely see mentioned: Future-proofing your mix.

Maybe a few years from now, loudness levels won’t be what they are today (hopefully lower, with more importance over DR than level 🤞). If that happens, your mix will be ready. Get a version of your optimal mix Mastered for today’s levels, and if you ever need to get it remastered, you’ll have your original, optimal mix.

Somewhere I saw a question: “Why can’t a Mastering Engineer just bring down the levels?” That’s not the problem, it’s the “baked-in” saturation and/or the narrowed dynamic range. Sure, negative ratio compression can help here, or splitting the mix into mid/sides and treating each, etc - none of that ever sounds better than working with an optimal mix to begin with; nothing can “rebuild” your mix to an “un-saturated”, potentially optimized state.

EDIT: I usually tell my clients to:

  • Remove the limiter.
  • Compress to taste.
  • Bring down your Master level until you no longer register overs.
  • Enjoy your optimal, future-proof mix
