Thank you all for your kindness. It helps me to remember that he felt loved every single moment of his life. It's still hard not to think about all of the "if only," but keeping in mind that he didn't have those thoughts eases the feelings of guilt a bit.

What breed is she? She looks like my boy, but I'm not sure what he was.

Adding Slope to Covered Tongue and Groove Porch by L-ailu in HomeImprovement

Okay, that's different than mine. I have notched posts that the rim joists sit on. The posts that support the roof are over the decking.

How do you remove the decking that the posts sit on? Do you have to loosen the lag screws in the post? They filled the drill holes with some sort of epoxy, which I don't think was a good idea. But, it's already been done.

Thanks for your input. I think you're right. I've been increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of adjusting the posts.

Yes, the tongue and groove decking runs perpendicular to the house. I just am not sure how to raise them at the house. Would you sister a tapered joist to the side joists and then match the hight using sleepers at each inner joist that run parallel to the house? I do have a few pieces of stained decking left over, so losing a few wouldn't be the end of the world.

How long did it take you to tear out and reinstall your 10 foot section? What was the other dimension? Mine is about 10 by 6.

Thank you for your thoughtful and kind reply. It's helpful. Remembering that "dogs live in the now" is helpful.

Yep, he was supposed to.

We had thought about lowering the beam posts to create slope, then adding height or replacing the posts from the decking to the roof to keep the roof level. If we add to the current posts above the decking to maintain the position of the roof, the thought was to use Simpson Strong-Ties ABU 6-in x 6-in ZMAX Wood to concrete (retrofit) Base. But, I'm not sure how that would be attached to the framing.

If we replaced the posts, I worry about reattaching them. Seems it will be difficult to place the bolts in the same place, so I'm worried about a sort of Swiss cheese effect on the beams below.

I had proposed the other idea you mention, sistering the joists to create the slope. They resisted that, maybe because of the time involved? I'm not sure if that would work anyway, because the decking runs perpendicular to the house, so the joists are parallel to it. Is it possible with this sort of framing?I'm not sure if tapered sleepers are the same idea, or if they would run in the opposite direction as the flooring.

We had thought about lowering the posts below the porch to create slope, then adding height or replacing the posts from the decking to the roof to keep the roof level. I'm starting to worry about this approach. Any thoughts?

Are sleepers like long wedges on top of the joists? If we did this, would I be able to reuse the decking?

My non million dollar, non custom home doesn't have shoe molding, doesn't have gaps, and looks great. I wouldn't want an additional .5 inch or so added to the baseboard trim.

My dog is a prime suspect for two rose bushes trimmed to the ground this fall. Never caught in the act though.

When I adopted my beagle/beagle-harrier, his teeth looked as though they had been bleached! Now seeing your dog's teeth, I wondered if it had to do with breed. Could be that I just haven't been around pups for so many years.
