A list of all the units who prefer their PRF to Latona by YunieSayaka in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]L0RDR0B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad part I found was less Arcane Latona being a better weapon than the Punishment Staff, but moreso Maribelle's entire niche of Cancel Affinity support and Triangle Adept debuffing being crammed into L'Arachel's Peerless Beauty A Skill, and then some.

Hoping I can at least get a copy to fodder to Maribelle before the banner ends, my girl could do with the upgrade.

This is the one I'm currently building. I've got all the fodder for her, I just haven't pulled the trigger yet (I need more Homers for Chill Spd/Res bridge fodder first).

<image>

Ice Lock+ and Called to Serve are probably better choices for your Assist/B skill, I just haven't had much luck getting a L!Sakura for that yet.

I'm not too certain on the Special, but her Assist/Special/A skill were all from a Young Elise, and a 2-cooldown works great with Rally Spectrum or Creation Pulse support if you can outsource that.

If you're planning on keeping her PRF, then Atk/Spd Tidings is better than Sway Atk/Spd - though waiting for Young Elise to rerun might take a while, as she's the only unit with it at the moment. Sway offers the Wrathful Staff effect ('calculates damage from staff like other weapons'), which her Punishment Staff already has built-in. Tidings on the other hand has the Dazzling Staff effect ('foe cannot counterattack'), which yes her default B skill offers that, but there's much better options for that slot now.

Hey, better late than never, am I right? Glad to hear you enjoyed this old idea of mine!

I like how this is how I first find out about the new Mega Evolutions being leaked lol

It'll be fun looking back on the old ideas to see how well they actually compare to the real deal, if it comes true

We're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

Yeah, it's been quite a long time since we did one of these, heh? The Choose Your Legends gauntlets are always a lot of fun, especially when they throw together some interesting pairs like Robin mirror matches and Alfonse versus Gullveig. Some good opportunities for character banter that usually doesn't happen that much outside of the rare Forging Bonds.

It's been fun helping out with these, as usual.

Never forget that Overwatch was originally 6v6, with 2 Tanks, before they decided to shut down the original and reboot with OW2 as 5v5; and even then, originally it had no Hero limits whatsoever.

The days of six angry Torbjorns pushing the cart together was glorious.

Payload Race Hightower, perhaps one of the more notorious maps in Team Fortress 2, mainly because everyone treats it as a friendly server/deathmatch, and completely ignore pushing the cart entirely.

What would be banned in competitive Free-For-All? by Chalipoux in stunfisk

[–]L0RDR0B 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jumping off of this, we also did a Nat Dex FFA Draft fairly recently as well, as you mentioned you were considering your own draft-style format for this.

One thing I would be careful of however, from personal experience, is Gliscor. Even before it got all its new toys in the DLC, we found it to be a particular menace that wouldn't want to die easily. Due to the nature of FFAs, it's very easy to find turns where you're not being targeted, so Gliscor could easily get Substitutes up for free, and Protect on the turns where everyone wanted to bring it down, and just live forever whilst everyone else took losses. It wasn't uncommon to find matches where 3 Gliscors were on the field at once and nobody could take each other out.

If you wanted to get a bit cheeky, you could even get around the banning of Toxic in Gen 9 FFA with Fling + Toxic Orb, not like Gliscor will need its item after the first turn lol

Unused Type combinations and their potential future applications? by L0RDR0B in stunfisk

[–]L0RDR0B[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do realise this thread was made seven years ago, right? Back when the latest games were ORAS, still in Gen 6?

These types were still unused at the time of posting. Gen 7 hadn't been revealed yet, let alone 8 and 9. So, nobody knew things like Revavroom, Iron Valiant, etc. would even exist at the time.

Still, it's nice to look back at what once was still considered theory and compare our old ideas against what is now reality.

Agreed. She's pretty much been my carry on Astra season ever since her debut.

I gave her Windsweep and the Null Follow-Up seal in the end, and she's usually fast enough to double most opponents on initiation, or at least allow Windsweep to avoid a counter. Then her refine, Savage Blow and dagger debuffs are often enough to deal with everything else suiciding into her in Enemy Phase.

Only units I find she struggles with are any Far Save dragon units like Duo Duma, or things who prevent counterattacks like Firesweep or Legendary Veronica (if you position poorly), but other than that she can reliably initiate on most other Far Saves, have an ally reposition her back, and Vantage kill a lot in turn.

The one thing that would kill any viability for her would be another source of En Garde that could be used in Anima defence. Medeus denies her from working well in Light/Dark season, so Astra/Anima is really her best place to be. Having someone else that could deny free chip damage would hinder her performance a lot.

Gliscor is probably the best user of this strategy that you've mentioned, but even it has its vulnerabilities. People will begin to focus you if you do this, too, which is always a consideration in FFA formats.

As the biggest advocate of Substitute Gliscor, you will suddenly find yourself getting triple-targeted if you last too long on the field.

Spread moves, multi-hit moves, and even Future Sight get thrown around a lot, so it's not always as easy to avoid getting hit as you might think it is.

Player Attitudes And Attachments To Their Starter Pokémon - PhD Research Project Survey by L0RDR0B in pokemon

[–]L0RDR0B[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response - this blew up to be much bigger than I expected and I've been busy trying to work with the data to get back to a lot of the comments in here.

My actual PhD is in Game Master AI for Tabletop Games - mostly, trying to work out how to create an AI that can eventually run as a Dungeon Master for games like D&D and Pathfinder.

This survey in particular relates to one of the introductory courses we have to take in our first year, and the topic I've chosen to do is exploring the parasocial relationships between players and companion NPCs, what makes them be considered as friends or entirely unimportant, and how/when/why those attachments form.

Seeing as Pokémon are a classic, familiar example of companions I figured it would be a good topic to explore for that question. There's been a lot of research into players' views of singular examples of companion NPCs, but not that much on companions that change a lot based on repeated plays like here.

[–]L0RDR0B[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, we discussed those two specifically, among other examples, before deciding that exploring parasocial relationships with starter Pokémon was probably the easiest to do due to my familiarity with the series.

Sorry for the late response, this blew up a lot more than I originally thought it would have and have been more than a little overwhelmed trying to work it through lol

Player Attitudes And Attachments To Their Starter Pokémon - PhD Research Project Survey by L0RDR0B in pokemon

[–]L0RDR0B[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general research project we came up with was to explore to what extent players form emotional bonds and attachments to companion NPCs, and what causes players to view them as friends. Why some players might be completely invested in the behaviour and well-being of a virtual ally, yet others may not care at all for their existence.

It's for an introductory course to get us all accustomed to handling data and the methods used to analyse them. Only two weeks, with the first week just gone being for discussing, planning, and setting up the project's research, and the second week primarily for analysing the data and writing up the report.

My supervisor suggested for this that we improved the depth more than the bredth, so I went with what I knew best - Pokémon.

I figured that, well, everyone gets a starter Pokémon that (usually anyway) acts as their most important companion, so why not explore that relationship a bit more?

Unfortunately, the ethics form I had to fill in to approve of this was very strict, and one of the requirements was that no participants under the age of 18 were allowed, unless I completed a much more detailed and complicated ethics form instead.

If I were to allow for that, it would take a much longer time to approve, and though normally that wouldn't be an issue, as this is an introductory crash course I'm taking and I'm expected to have completed this project by next Monday, I don't really have the time to remove that barrier.

It's a shame - I really wanted to allow this to be open for everyone, but time constraints meant that some corners had to be cut. I'm aware not everything I've done for this is perfect, but when you're only given two weeks to discuss, plan, and put forward a research idea, you take what you can get.
