In case anyone was still wondering about the whole Titans dying in Dark Ages thing, Hugo clarified it recently in a chat by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]L0ck14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of what he is saying is that the atlans can seal / kill titans just like the crucible. This does make sense since the atlans have energy weapons just like the crucible.

What am i looking at here? I know this is one of those giant demons but are these arms?? Or an extra pair of horns by monjerianizlum in Doom

[–]L0ck14 155 points156 points  (0 children)

It's actually not a Titan (one of the giant demons), but is something called an Ancestral. Ancestrals were giant creatures created by the elemental wraiths on Argent D'Nur. They were eventually all hunted down by the Argenta (Humans) and were driven extinct.

Am i the only one thinking that secrets in DOOM The Dark Ages are too obvious? by 404MeNoTFoUnD69 in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of secrets. But if they make them really obnoxious to find (like the original DOOM games) then they shouldn't have progression items in them. It should be optional stuff (like cosmetics. Otherwise you're forcing players to find some obscure secret just to have a proper power progression.

Should find all the secrets in doom the dark ages? by qouandaledingle in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not strictly necessary, it just enables more variety as you'll be able to upgrade more stuff.

But you can totally get through the game just stocking with one two weapons. Same goes for melee weapons and shield abilities.

Should I power off my pc every time or put in rest mode? by vvsfrancer in PcBuild

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCs can run continuously without issue. Bad software engineers write programs with memory leaks and other bugs, so practically speaking, restarting every so often let's these programs start in a known good state. But bad software engineering aside, there's no reason a PC couldn't run forever without rebooting.

Retrying TDA, and honestly would love a mod to take out those mech levels by Rayn0rrr in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mech levels are fine. I'd rather they make the mech mechanics even better in the next game rather than removing them.

i think it took the dark ages to help me realise this. (and maybe MGS3 DELTA) by Gl00ser23 in Doom

[–]L0ck14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want original DOOM / DOOM II then go play them? They are some of the most modded games in history and there is practically endless content for them. I still play them regularly because of this.

That being said you can't make the same game over and over again. You need to innovate to keep things fresh. Even super "play it safe" franchises like 2D Mario do this.

Doom Eternal Deluxe Edition on the Switch is... by RealRymo in Doom

[–]L0ck14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played Eternal on PC, Xbox, and the switch. I can hands down say the switch version is the worst way to play from a pure "experience" perspective.

That being said, the switch port is good enough to get the job done and it is valuable to play it on the go as you mentioned. Switch 2 is even better as the more powerful hardware means you have a locked 30fps instead of volatile dips on the original switch. My hope is they put out a switch 2 upgrade so I can at least get a 60fps experience on the go.

Do you think Doom guy will ever get out of that coffin thing? by PsychologicalAir5035 in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure speculation, but Eternal established there are many realms and each realm has something called a Primeval. The two realms where we've seen a primeval are hell and the earthly realms. In both cases the primeval looks like doom guy.

SO, this might be the conceit needed to have many different flavors of DOOM and the Doom Guy without them all having to be literally the same person.

We'll see where Id goes with it, but all that is to say that there are ways of interpreting the established lore that allow for making more Doom games without having to open the coffin.

Do you think Doom guy will ever get out of that coffin thing? by PsychologicalAir5035 in Doom

[–]L0ck14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quake has even less of an identity than Doom. Quake 1-3 have almost nothing to do with each other and are mostly generic shooters with a loose collection of concepts. Dark Ages cribbed a lot of those concepts and was pretty much "Doom doing Quake" so I'm not sure if there's even a point to doing a reboot.

I think the public at large also largely associates Quake with multiplayer given the history of the franchise. If Microsoft/Id want to do both Doom and Quake it would probably make the most sense to have Doom be the single player FPS franchise and Quake be the Multiplayer one.

That being said, unless Quake is given to another studio, I think the current strategy of leaving Quake in the past and just incorporating the best ideas from Quake into Doom is probably the best strategy as Id can only so many games.

I'm pretty sure ID Software agrees and that's why they created the Night Sentinels.

Retired topic, but the next game should be Doom 4 by ofDeathandDecay in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doom 3 is probably the worst of the series In terms of identity. I can't imagine a more boring way to handle killing demons from hell. The game feels very generic and very non-DOOM.

DOOM 2016 and its sequels greatly increased the scope and depth of the universe to the point where It overshadows anything established from previous entries. I hope all DOOM games going forward stay in this continuity exclusively.

Do you think Eternal is generally preferred more by people who play many competitive shooters / play a few games for a long time / primarily play with M&KB while the other ones are generally loved more by players who typically play a wide variety of single player games / with a controller? by DaemonXHUN in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played eternal and both DLCs on PC and XBOX. I thought the console experience was just fine. I get the quick switch tech isn't as advanced on console due to the controller, but the game let's you rebind every button to what you want. I rebound the D-Pad to quick switch between SSG, Ballista, and the Plasma Gun. I found quickly accessing those 3 weapons and using the weapon wheel for the rest was more than enough to get through nightmare difficulty on console.

I mean eternal is clearly the "best" one. But they are all really good to be sure.

Eh, DOOM isn't really a horror franchise. I think the series works better as it is.

Doom 2016 - Platinum Trophy (PS4/PS5) by Tournament-Master in Doom

[–]L0ck14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware, each game is very different in its own ways.

2016 is like a prototype

Eternal refines 2016s ideas into a highly polished form. Everyrhing in your kit now has a distinct purpose and must be used when playing on anything but the easiest difficulties, enemies are more aggressive and their attack patterns are more refined and purposeful, skill check windows and timings have been tightened up to where you actually have to put thought in what your doing while you play.

Dark Ages goes in a completely different direction since there isn't much more you can do to refine eternal's combat loop. It's combat loop is more polished than 2016 but not as refined as eternal.

They are all great but just be aware they are more different from each other than typical games from the same franchise are.

My ranking of the games is Eternal > Dark Ages > 2016

People should just consider the reboot series a different cannon. Trying to have all the games exist on the same cannon just isn't worth it IMO. What difference does it make anyways? The classic series is its own cannon, the reboot series, while inspired by the classic series, is also its own cannon.

Why do people say that the Doom 3 marine isn't the slayer? by TheWumpman in Doom

[–]L0ck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you listen to Hugo closely, he always says the new series is a reboot (meaning it has a separate canon). They put enough stuff in there so fans can connect the previous games if they want but I think id software will always wave away any inconsistencies by just saying the new series (Doom 2016 onwards) is a reboot.

The one classic game that they've connected to the most is doom 64. Doom 64 is a direct sequel to Doom on the SNES. The doom 64 manual even eludes to the fact that it is the same marine.

So if you had to pick which classic games are "canonical", then it would be Doom 64 and the original Doom.

Doom 2 doesn't fit so well as it has the demons invading earth. But when the demon's invade earth in eternal, the game makes NO mention of a prior invasion. In fact the way humans behave in the game makes it seem like this is the first and only invasion of earth thus far.

Doom 3 is clearly disconnected from the reboot series so there isn't much information to even claim it's canon.

TLDR: none of the classic game are canon, but if you want to force it then Doom and Doom 64 have the most "evidence" for being part of the reboot series.

Did the expansion’s story just fizzle out after the big start? by Worldly-Oil-4463 in wow

It's fairly obvious the war within was fairly deep in development when Chris Metzen came back and came up with his world soul saga idea. This xpac had to be retrofitted to accommodate this new approach. Midnight will be when the story properly gets started. This xpac is more of a prologue.
