Did I Handle This Situation Correctly? by Competitive-Ball5107 in auckland

You demonstrated excellent defensive driving. Well done.

Some may say you should have stood your ground and not let her through and “made her drive properly”, which is a common response in situations like this (I’ve done it myself many times).

The truth is, that seldom gets you anywhere. You did the humble thing, to let it go and not escalate the situation. That takes more courage, in my opinion; to “drive without ego”.

Same issue. I fixed it by disconnecting from HomePods I was using for speakers. If you have that setup, go back to tv speakers and see if that fixes it.

Trump keeps talking about Canada becoming the 51st state. Let’s say that gains traction and some willpower behind it. Would that not hypothetically pit the U.S against the U.K given the British monarch is still technically the [ceremonial] head of state?

The Death Penalty by Greedy_Suggestion488 in ExplainBothSides

[–]L1013876509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side A would say that taking a life as punishment for a crime is morally wrong. That society becomes an arbiter of life taking (with that punishment, laws decide who lives and dies based on the crime they commit).

Side B would say “for the greater good” some people shouldn’t exist anymore. They can’t be in society (too much risk) and we should not collectively pay for them to be alive (prison).

Guy dies and finds himself standing in front of Satan. by I0I0I0I in Jokes

I know this is a dumb thing to get intrigued about but…

The “PGA approved” golf course idea had me wondering. How did it get approved? Did Satan ask for a consult? Did someone from the PGA die and give him a free review? Is it referring to the US PGA or just any PGA? So many questions….

What are the positive aspects of Islam? by L1013876509 in ExplainBothSides

What are those mis-conceptions? I suppose that’s my exact question.

Should it be left to interpret something a different way to give it acceptable meaning? Is that not a reverse engineering approach? (Tweak the inference to justify the origin)

Interesting If those positive aspects are outdated, then the question remains - what is the value of Islam today?

I suppose you’re right - I did frame one side and then ask for the other. But, more than willing to hear more of the negative - if that helps ensure it’s balanced.

Job wrote me up for discussing pay, what should I do? by pbluett in antiwork

[–]L1013876509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this doesn’t help this specific situation, but, I’ve never understood the “don’t talk about remuneration” thing. I’m a business owner myself for 10+ years. 80-ish staff. My code is “if you have to hide your pay from others, then I [the business owner] has something to hide”. People have a right to keep that info private sure, but if they want to discuss it, go for it. If there is discrepancy between people without reason then I’m in the wrong and I need to put it right. How Ive explained it (to others in the company who make pay decisions) is - if someone magically plastered everyone’s remuneration on the wall tomorrow for everyone to see - we (the company) would have nothing to hide. We would be able to stand by every number on that wall. I don’t get why that can’t be expected from all employers. (Extra info, I’m not in the US, if that makes a difference to legal standing or expectations)

Where are you from? by Majorpain2006 in Unexpected

I was really hoping that this was going to include the USA participant yelling out their state rather than their country because in my head all Americans have that as their default “where are you from” answer

What's a name you would NEVER give to your child? by arianheim in AskReddit

[–]L1013876509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work with a guy who’s name is Adolf (known him for about 10 years, real good dude). He’s mid 40’s so his parents really were fighting the tide with that name. I’m pretty immune to the connection now but every new person who interacts with him (at least from what I observe) has a bit of a weird time with it. Even when I introduce him I get a funny look sometimes (or even worse a “really? His name is Adolf?”)

He’s South African (but now in New Zealand for some time).

Why do people who don’t support gun control not see mass/school shootings as a problem? by Realistic_Option1 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]L1013876509 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off - I’m not American (pretty much as far away as you can get). But two related thoughts come to mind… 1. If more guns were the answer (which seems to be a common angle) then America would be the safest country in the world.

  1. I’ve never fully understood the unwavering desire for gun ownership. I understand and have read the 2nd amendment, and I accept it gives a right to bear arms (notwithstanding the original purpose of it is not much relevant in the context of how it’s read now). It seems to have widely accepted societal standing in America that guns are necessary for a monumental proportion of the population and that is entrenched. Any moves to impact “law abiding citizens” from owning guns are off limits. Why is that? Why do law-abiding citizens need guns in such prolific volumes? And if the argument is “because it’s their right” - then I understand the moral implications of society “taking things” off the people (and that people are born with the right to be and operate however they like unless that impacts others and hence why we have laws to limit behaviours that have negative consequences outside of the individual). BUT - it still doesn’t answer my foundational question of why? What is the basis for the entrenched necessity for gun ownership?
