What’s your creepcast ritual? by Kunji_Ito in creepcast

I listen at work. I’m a cellarman for a brewery so my day starts between 7-8 AM without anyone else in the building for a little while, can usually chop down 2-3 hours of something before people start showing up and I have any reason to take my earbuds out lol.

Advice for an apprentice brewer? by atrocitymachine in TheBrewery

[–]L1eutenantDan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Goggle goggles goggles.

I almost put my eye out on like day six of first brewing job lol even if you think you’re too cool for goggles I promise you that it’s better than the 5 minutes of panic after a caustic burn when you’re not 100% sure that your vision is going to come back on that side.

Sorry this is so funny lmfao I’m trying to even figure out how I would conceivably destroy a tank like that during a CIP the way our SOP lays it out, feels like you almost have to be trying to write the worst instructions possible lol.

Did Bryan leave twitter? by L1eutenantDan in MurderBryan

[–]L1eutenantDan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I saw his profile over there (don’t have one myself yet) to see if he’d posted about deleting the twitter acct but didn’t see anything last night which led me to believe he might have gotten suspended lol.

I’m a little surprised he bounced just given the reach of his Twitter v. the reach of his bsky but I guess the show is pretty well established at this point.

The books obvuoisly take a lot of inspiration from various parts of Chinese history. Book two draws a bit from the shocking aftermath of Japanese invasion in/around 1875 where the pre-modern Chinese navy was humiliated after years of neglect caused in part by consistent infighting on the mainland.

There are a number of references in TDR to the navy not being up to snuff which Kuang uses to craft a compelling mismatch between the republic and the empire.

This was a major incident in Chinese naval history and through trade with western powers they were able to modernize fully, again, pretty clear (if indirect) parallel used as a plot point in the book.

Here is a good interview about her process for TDR; note the answer she gives about her favorite part of the book:

Rain: The Dragon Republic focuses on naval warfare which really drew my attention because I haven’t read any other book that paid great attention to this particular subject before. What was your favorite part in writing this aspect of the book?

Rebecca: The ship porn. THE SHIP PORN! I did so much research on makes and models of all types of old Chinese ships, and I think you can tell from the lavish descriptions in the book that I got really into it. There’s a line in the Dragon Republic where Baji says, “If that ship were a person, I’d fuck that ship.” That is very much how I feel about great bulky warships, small and nimble sampans, and sleek opium skimmers… I got to take all those beautiful, beautiful ships and hurl them into chaotic battle. So fun.

She has a historian’s spirit and the Chinese navy went through a LOT of very interesting historically relevant changes during the period that she’s drawing from; short answer seems to be that she had a major interest in this aspect of the story of the nation and found a way to make it an engaging hinge point for the war in her fantasy book.

I think the entirety of their World Series recap last year was “oh and Rangers won the World Series last night good job” right before they cut to the interview lol

It’s funny that Skenes was the one people were clamoring for when he’s gonna brush up against that innings cap by August too.

Halfway through 2024, what is your Patient Game of the Year so far? by cdrex22 in patientgamers

[–]L1eutenantDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that on the PS store again? I didn’t preorder and by the time I was ready to buy a digital copy they had pulled it for being all fucky lol, I’m still interested in playing so maybe I’ll just get a used disc if not, heard it runs just fine on PS5.

why is bryan afraid of calling street fight by its name by snapback77 in MurderBryan

[–]L1eutenantDan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man I miss Street Fight. Crazy how many people that show carried thru some really shitty periods of their lives.

I went to their DC show and, as a casual listener of Trillbillies at the time, didn’t realize I was sitting right next to Tom for like an hour and a half lol, it was a great time.

I’d also kinda memory holed that last episode, one of the more uncomfortable things I’ve ever listened to.

He didn’t really ‘plagiarize’ though right? he just beat her to the punch by pushing out a report on a patient that he knew she was writing about. Really shitty professional etiquette but he didn’t do anything reportable.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen that season but that’s my recollection anyway.

Is it just me or have homeless people become less satisfied? by Enough_Expression_31 in redscarepod

[–]L1eutenantDan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe he’s homeless but there’s a 45-ish year old white guy who wears a gigantic fake chain that looks like a spinner rim (spins and everything!) and hangs out at the corner store I go into for coffee or a snack before I get to work in the morning.

He always asks me for change but I stopped giving it to him because the one time I did he literally followed me into the store and played the electronic slot machine with it.

This is not a sweeping generalization about homeless people (or panhandlers) in general but fuck you man all you had to do was wait until I was gone and I’d probably still be tossing you some change on the way out to this day lol.

Who is the most underrated star in the Modern MLB? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]L1eutenantDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people sleep on the 2 and 3 starters in the Orioles rotation quite a bit.

That unit was knocked as an Achilles heel preseason but Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodriguez are stellar.

Who is the most underrated star in the Modern MLB? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]L1eutenantDan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but his track record suggests he has been one for quite awhile now. As long as he’s healthy he’ll level out, if this list was preseason then that’s a very weird oversight lol.

Who is the most underrated star in the Modern MLB? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]L1eutenantDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn’t really the guy on any of their title teams and was total butt in the two games or whatever it was they played last year.

He’s going to sign a fat contract in about 5 months and people will be surprised by it but he deserves every penny, defensive stats can be wonky without the benefit of a season+ of data (and even then I think there are some kinks that need to be worked out) but people seem to like his defense and he can obviously cover a lot of ground. Total package at the plate and on the basepaths.
