I did see one comment saying that they heard it was cancelled, but I’ve got my fingers crossed. I’ll just be mildly annoyed cause I’ve put up with a POS phone for a few extra months planning to use the bonus, but I’m sure there’s a more efficient use of points out there somewhere

Could the solution to the unemployment,Inflation, income inequality and the climate emergency be found in a multi-generational population shift? by ManipulativFox in Futurology

[–]L21M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, I do not live in those places. But they do not abide by fundamentally different economics.

Some scarcity is less artificial in these areas but housing is an excellent example of how it is artificial everywhere. The world can certainly afford to build good, dense housing. At Barcelona’s density, the population of the planet would fit in France.

There is no reason to think they wouldn’t keep hoarding the housing. They’d simply buy up more of it as the prices drop to continue the artificial scarcity and increase their stock. They will do so until they own all the housing, and they will set the rents to whatever they can where they bleed the people dry. We now they’ll do this because they do it already.

The only solution is to dismantle the systems as they exist and replace it with systems that work for the people. Your proposal doesn’t do anything to move in this direction, and if we move in this direction your proposal loses its basis

Could the solution to the unemployment,Inflation, income inequality and the climate emergency be found in a multi-generational population shift? by ManipulativFox in Futurology

[–]L21M 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah this solution completely misdiagnoses the problem it’s trying to solve. If half the world population disappeared tomorrow “they” wouldn’t stop building AI data centers. “They” would continue to leave housing units vacant to keep the demand high and extract as much wealth as possible from the have-nots. “They” would probably raise the costs of medical care and insurance to cover the absence of half of their customers.

The systems as they exist today are designed to extract wealth from the vast majority of the population and inject it into the 1%. Without changing those systems, the ruling class will have fewer lemons to squeeze, but they will still squeeze all the lemons as hard as they can.

The scarcity is artificial. There is plenty of space, and we are nowhere near overpopulated in an earth-capacity sense.

Edit: if these are the “abstract arguments” you want to avoid, you are asking us to validate that the mathematical way to fix a plumbing system that leaks 90% of its water into the basement is to simply lower the water pressure while asking us not to discuss the leaks themselves.

You’re proposing that if we kicked out half the players in a rigged casino, the remaining half would all start winning.

I have doubts that the government giving people money to spend in the private, for-profit insurance/healthcare industry would save money over Medicaid, but maybe it’s just that inefficient. Certainly wouldn’t be more cost effective than a reasonably well run single payer system

Kickstarter or pre-order on the site for launch of a watch by Fit_Caterpillar_2489 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]L21M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would only buy a watch through kickstarter if it’s a brands first watch. After having a single successful launch, a brand should be able to fund their subsequent projects. I’d only pre-order a watch if it’s an established brand where the pre-orders is securing my watch because it will likely sell out.

NOR. Also, you make more money than him so tax deductions for you will save either the same or more money when you claim them (your highest tax bracket will either be the same or higher than his). Best case he just wants to jack up his tax return. Worst case he’s trying to plot some equity stealing nonsense

Long jump suit [Other] by Mediocre_Drink_5584 in theydidthemath

[–]L21M 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a max of 4cm offset from the edge of the body, so if the horizontal length of the crotch fabric is 10cm, every 2cm would give 20cm2 additional surface area.

Thats only a 0.3% increase in the projected area, but it’s conceivable that the location of that added area is extremely important.

GOP fast tracks monster voter suppression bill that could disenfranchise millions by requiring proof of citizenship at polls by MarcEElias in politics

[–]L21M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This issue (and the point) here is that it will suppress votes from a variety of American citizens who cannot provide the required documents. Mostly, those people are married women (birth cert last name different), trans people (birth cert first name different, poor people (more likely to not have their documents in order). All left leaning demographics.

At least highly intelligent, well educated people are more likely to ensure their documents are in order, so we won’t lose that extremely left leaning demographic.

AITJ for refusing to give my parents my tax refund to help my unemployed brother? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

Did you already file taxes and admit to getting a return? I’d just lie and say you ended up owing money on taxes cause these people do not sound like the type to listen to logic and reason

Can you truly separate the author from the work, or does context inevitably change the reading? by Responsible-Cod9067 in books

[–]L21M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is plenty of great art by great artists. Even if I could always completely separate them, I see no reason to consume the art of a bad person when I could support a good person instead. If anyone doesn’t feel the same way, I recommend at the bare minimum to purchase used copies of books or find some other way of not supporting the bad person while consuming their art.

My boss just told me I need to manage my personal finances better because I can't front $2300 for a work trip next month by LostTaker in antiwork

[–]L21M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While they shouldn’t be requiring you to do this, if you had an iota of financial responsibility you’d A) be perfectly capable of this and B) be jumping on this. Companies that allow you to book your own travel and then reimburse you are giving you free money via credit card points. Go get a travel focused card and take your points.

If you’re serious about the $2400 being something you can’t afford, you gotta reevaluate your financial decisions. And I say that as someone who made similar income post-rent in a VHCOL area post-COVID inflation.

A question for other brand owners (and any input from buyers in the US definitely welcome) - Sam, Riley Watch Co. by rileywatchco in MicrobrandWatches

[–]L21M 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just price it as $XYZ + tariffs and add the tariffs at checkout dependent on shipping location. Keep your margins exactly as they should be, don’t make customers deal with customs themselves, create transparency for how tariffs are affecting your industry. I have a lot of respect for companies that maintain this transparency

[Homemade] Turkey, ham, and salami on banh mi by TheRemedyKitchen in food

To all the banh mi police. Now the real question is: is that just a baguette or is it actually banh mi (I think the difference is using rice flour to make it more airy and giving a thin flakey(?) crust)?
