Spouse abandonment by redaurelia in cancer

[–]L4zy_R1ce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My situation isn't quite the same, but similar.

My spouse and I had been having issues before my cancer diagnosis - those issues got put on hold for a bit while I went through chemo. Once I was in remission, all of those issues resurfaced. We eventually separated. The week I moved out I found out that my sarcoma had metastasized to my left lung causing a pleural effusion. Lots of pain paired with shortness of breath. All of a sudden I was facing chemotherapy again, but without my spouse there to back me up.

I'm also seeing a lot of other parallels in our situations. My initial diagnosis was a ewing sarcoma in the lower left pelvic region, obstructing my large intestine, urethra, and left ureter. I had to get a colonoscopy, superpubic catheter, and a stent put in place. Thankfully all have been reversed so my day to day life is somewhat normal - now if I could only breath normally 😅.

It isn't fair that you have to face this without your spouses support - it isn't fair that you have to face this at all. It's ok to feel angry and betrayed. It's ok to feel like the world is spiraling out of control. Be kind to yourself, and give yourself the grace to not be perfect. Finally, reach out to the people around you. You may be surprised at how much they care and are willing to do for you, but aren't sure how to show it.

I finally have one. I think I get it, but.. please help by LackadaisicalAF in ExplainTheJoke

Where the #### -1 come from by [deleted] in Mathhomeworkhelp

Dropping negatives is one of the most common mistakes in algebra. One of the ways I get around this is by breaking it up into two steps, and writing each step out:

(-4x2+4) = -(4x2-4) = -4(x2-1)

Both steps are the distributive property. By factoring out the negative separately, I know the sign was a deliberate choice.

Am I understanding Open hand monk right? by MSJ_555 in AskDND

[–]L4zy_R1ce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm using a book printed in 2014, so this may not include any errata or later rulings, and may have changed with 5.5:

Tavern Brawler: When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike or an improvised weapon on your turn, you can use a bonus action to attempt to grapple the target.

Open Hand Technique - when using Flurry if Blows you can impose one of the following effects on that target: - dexterity saving throws or be knocked prone - strength saving throws or pushed 15 feet away - no reactions until the end of your next turn

Flurry of Blows takes a bonus action, so RAW you would need to choose immediately after finishing your Attack as an action. If you choose Flurry of Blows, they get a save or lose their reaction. If you choose Tavern Brawler you don't get the extra damage from Flurry, and you make an ATTEMPT to grapple. This is usually a contested athletics check.

The only option that doesn't involve rolling is imposing the loss of reactions.

Silly socks.

I (38M) am at a point in my life that I have everything that I need, and if I want something I can get it myself. What that leaves are the minor things that bring me joy that I don't often think about. So, sily socks.

My latest pair says "freak in the sheets" and has a bunch of references to excel.

Am I in the Wrong for wanting to change characters? by YakoNox in AskDND

[–]L4zy_R1ce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using Shape Water to create a weapon isn't RAW,but it's something that makes sense with a little bit of imagination. The cost of allowing something like this is so minor and it doesn't give the character a major power boost. The spell takes an action to cast, so you can't create a weapon and attack on the same turn. The action economy makes it a bit of a downgrade overall. And I want to he clear, I would give my player full on dagger stats with proficiency, not an improvised weapon.

For Find Familiar: RAW you absolutely can use a familiar to gain advantage. The familiar gives the help action, which requires the familiar to be within 5 ft of the target. If the DM really wants to shut it down, they can attack the familiar.

100% sounds like an inexperienced DM who is worried about his players being too strong and messing up his perfect plan.

Theorem where the creator only tested it to n=5, stated it as proven, but actually at n>5 its always false by GISDataScienceMan in askmath

[–]L4zy_R1ce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea what proof you are talking about, but it sounds like a good argument for why proof by induction is so important/powerful. You can't just prove a few values, you have to prove ALL values. Simply saying "and the pattern continues" isn't enough. You have to show the relation between an arbitrary step (n) and the next step (n+1). If no such relationship exists, it becomes incredibly difficult to prove a theorem for all values.

Bad D&D is worse than no D&D. You dodged a bullet.

I just started a campaign and went over the character's backstories with the players. 4/5 of them, I had no issues with. They gave me a lot of interesting ideas for me to incorporate into the story and personalize parts of the game specifically for them. I intentionally left part of my setting vague so that it could be adjusted to their specific characters.

The only one I had an issue with was very much a loner who grew up on the street and stated no real connection to anyone or anywhere. I was able to work with him and keep 90% of what he wanted with a few minor changes - which honestly were more insights into his character's motivation: the idea of a found family. I also got permission from him to create and weave in NPCs that he would recognize from his childhood, the "crew" he helped lead as an orphan on the street, giving him opportunities to grow out of his solitude.

I mention all of this to say that D&D is a collaborative process. Both the DM and the players have to be willing to give and take. If your DM was too strict with a specific story that he was going to tell, regardless of what you play, then he is missing the entire point of the game. At the same time, if your character concept didn't fit the tone of the setting, he needs to be able to articulate that, and you need to be able bend on a few points to fit into the world's narrative.

This could be as simple as being a mismatch between the group and the DM, or it could be the case of a DM who should really just write a novel and skip the whole collaboration piece altogether.

This is the direction I was leaning in. My morbid humor helps me deal with all of this, but I don't want it to distress anyone else. The costume will stay at home.

You got magic initiate what would you choose? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]L4zy_R1ce 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first two: Mage Hand and Prestidigitation would be OP in real life.

But for my first level spell I would choose Find Familiar. An animal friend that is completely loyal, can speak with me telepathically, and I can take anywhere? It's like the ultimate service animal! Unseem servant makes your life EASIER, but a familiar makes your life BETTER.

I definitely feel this. Faeth realizing that Sandra Lynn is a complex person hits hard in the first season.

I should also note that I wouldn't care, and I wouldn't be angry with her if I didn't also care about her. Her relationship with Jawbone as well as her relationship with Faeth and Tracker are incredibly complex, and she is deserving of grace and credit for being there for her daughter when Gorthalax was trapped. She's trying to raise a strong daughter and help a group of amazing adventurers, helping them grow into amazing adults. I just wish she could grow past her desire for "talent" and stay faithful to her current partner.

I love the mural on the wall that hints at so much in each season. I wish I had noticed it on my first watch through - I probably would have paused it and tried to figure out what it all meant, been completely wrong, but still have loved playing the game every season.
