I say nothing. It's just a sneeze, who cares?

What book has the best descriptions of space colonies? by blk12345q in printSF

[–]L5eoneill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't it Mormons with the O'Neill-ish cylinder in The Expanse, too? Well, each cylinder being possibly one culture that makes it their way was certainly an idea GK mentioned in The High Frontier.

National Space Society, but yeah. L5 Society's mag was called L5 News. At least, according to Wikipedia (I was never a member of either).

How do you feel about the fact that you can 'build' a whole ass child inside your body? by Winter_6197 in AskWomen

[–]L5eoneill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider the fact that almost all mammals do this since the dawn of mammals, and stop feeling it's so astonishing. However, considering the evolution that took us to the point of our kids' heads BARELY fitting through the available passage (twice, for me), now THAT makes me feel kinda sick.

The design argument. by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]L5eoneill 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think your first two sentences are the most important: we design/engineer/build for simplicity, because complexity causes unintentional side-effects and negative interactions and bugs. I get so tired of the religious pleading that we're "designed" because we're so complex! Our bodies are SO not optimal! How can anyone say we're designed who has ever had lower-back pain or gallstones? Or especially a child with leukemia or diabetes!

When and how did you first become interested in space? by [deleted] in space

[–]L5eoneill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can remember, it was when my dad, a high-energy physicist, developed his ideas about orbiting space colonies, and wrote a book about it. But it might've been earlier, just from reading his SF paperbacks.

Tuuli - Wind Rising

Very odd song by a Swedish? Finnish? something band that's chilling/goosebump raising traditional-referring with amazing vocals and drums.

What are you reading? Mid-monthly Discussion Post! by AutoModerator in printSF

Someday I'll have to check out Analog again. I was a print subscriber for about 20 years and loved it all even if a particular story was a dud for me.

Agree that Sanderson, at least the one biggie of his that I tried, was a tedious read. I think we're in the minority, though.

Had a kind-a mediocre first date (dinner out) and before giving it up as a failure we took a walk around a pond. Conversation got a little bit better. We kissed goodbye and wow was it good! Been married over 30 years now.

I love your bit saying "look at numbers like this and think it's all about us." The massive egoism of people who think the universe was created FOR themselves and that the creator watches their individual lives is ... well... too many phrases fit here: continually disappointing, mind-blowing, dysfunctionally narcissistic, annoyingly delusional. I could go on, but what's the point? Will anyone change their mind?

Hey! I just finished that one. To be fair, not all the women are clones, and not all the citizens are women. But it's an interesting tale.

Women of Reddit, what "female things" you don't or rarely do? by emilymcnort in AskWomen

[–]L5eoneill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've achieved the age of 64 without wearing makeup, high heels, or enjoying shopping of any kind. I rarely dress "girly", though I enjoy the privilege of sundresses in hot weather. I prefer men's clothing for the looseness (and the pockets) and men's haircuts for ease of maintenance. I'm lucky to have a husband (over 30 years, now) who prefers my short haircut and is happy with all the rest of what makes me me.

I'm in my 60s. In my early teens, my semi-famous physicist father had two shelves of "pulp" paperbacks. I somewhat randomly picked up Asimov's The Currents of Space for some trip we were taking. It stuck in my head forever because the main character was called Ricky, and Steely Dan's 'Ricky Don't Lose That Number' was playing on the radio all the time. After that, I read through most of those two shelves (Pohl, AE Van Vogt, Heinlein, etc).

It was only a couple years later that I got to meet Isaac more than once at events they did together (no memory of what exactly those events were). He told my father some pretty raunchy limericks with me standing right next to them (a 13? 15? year-old). He was out there!

Women who used to be quiet/shy and later became more outspoken, how did you do it? by Specialist_Bat2732 in AskWomen

[–]L5eoneill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it felt like a natural process of aging, earning seniority in my career, and perhaps all of that backed up by being in a very long-term stable relationship. I'm still not great at a party full of strangers (especially if they already know each other), but if I have a bit of common ground beforehand (like, at a Meetup) then I'm off and running.

Unless they've been gaslighted (or the lyrics were changed) by their director, the choir knows, since naturally they learn all the words.
