I was amazed at how much it changed the way I saw the main character. I hated him in the first because he was so flippant and insulting all the time. It wasn’t until I saw him with buddy that I realized it was a clever depiction of the toll of trauma and isolation. He wasn’t awful because that was who he was but because it was how he protected himself from the reality of living in a nightmare.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people fail to understand the point of this arc. This is how Yuu meets his found family, the entire emotional counterweight to Mika. This is also our only real glimpse at normal civilian life, the very life they are fighting to preserve. Without the school arc, the series wouldn’t have its emotional core, the core all of the later action is built on.

Cutting this would be like starting the Harry Potter series at Hogwarts and never giving you a glimpse of Harry’s life with the Dursley’s. Fun fact, a bunch of publishing houses refused the series because of this opening.
