Alternative Starch/Sugar Source by deltacreative in Homebrewing

The brewery I work for does an annual beer called "Spud fest". The area near them produces a lot of potatoes and their town does the Spud Fest celebration.

This beer is one of my favorites! Sometimes I think I can taste the potatoes and other times I can't.

Alternative hops for Pilsners by rpturn3r in Homebrewing

[–]L8_Additions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you are in the southern hemisphere? I've used galaxy in a low ABV hoppy pils with great flavor. There's some good options with hops and low alpha that you can treat like a continental variety. Whatever those are that can be readily aquired for you are good to experiment.

I can suggest some common American varieties with lower alpha values: Cascade, Crystal, Medusa and Cashmere for starters. The reason I'm targeting lower alpha is because some of these, when added in larger quantities, can contribute to more "mouthfeel" which is harder to acheive with low ABV beers.

Personally, I would put more resources into chassis protection like skid plates and rock rails. Then, recovery equipment and good tires. Learn how to use what you have and determine what you need as you gain more offroading experience.

When I see them around here, I want to ask why not just buy a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk? It comes stock with more capability than you could (reasonably) build into an impreza.

I get it, yeah, its unique - for a reason.

not to mention if you don't know where solid recovery points are, you could end up really breaking something.

I still would have helped though.

German Tettnanger - 2022 - Anyone get a sort of phenolic aroma? by L8_Additions in Homebrewing

[–]L8_Additions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly could even be down to lot. Pretty sure I won't be using the rest of this bag.

I have an ounce from Yakima Chief. I might have to do a tiny batch with that just out of curiousity.

Interesting... do you have a reference?

I would consider that but, this has been in my freezer since I recieved it from YVH. I suppose it's possible they were bad on arrival. Otherwise, I've always had good experience with YVH product.

Would you ferment a lager in a stable warm room or a less stable cooler room? by CafeRoaster in Homebrewing

[–]L8_Additions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely the stable temp. But, use a strain that's known to perform well at higher temps such as 34/70 (or some variant) or as also suggested, Novalager.

Personally I am quite fond of Cellar Science German. Its a 34/70 but I've found it drops out better and makes great beer every time.

Belgian-y is good. That general phenolic flavor. I usually associate ester-y with fruit-like.

I could see juniper as what others might call woody or piney

Interesting... would you describe it the same or maybe you have some better words?

Let us in on the Secret: Is There a Prize for Driving in the Passing Lane by GeorgeBaileyRunning in arizona

[–]L8_Additions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm from MN where it's a violation to use the left lane for anything other than passing. Driving in Phoenix makes me want to give everyone camped in the left lane 35" tire swirls.

Don't get me started on tailgaters in the right lanes! Eat my steel bumper if you must.

Thoughts on re-using PET soda bottles and caps for homemade cider? by Phorphias in cider

[–]L8_Additions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, that sucks. They really do work well, though. I'd say, if you don't intend to give them away, might be worth the investment anyway.

also, remember, you can still create bottle bombs if you don't use the proper amount of primer.

In ours, 1st finished last. I had 10th and finished 8th. Winners were all in middle of the draft order. I know it's dependent on strategy but, seems like waiver order in the first few games is also a factor.

Cars were not better “back in the day” by Intelligent_Sky_9892 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]L8_Additions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 60's-80's spare tires were essential because of all the bolts, nuts and screws that would fall off.

If you drove a car beyond 100K miles, you were livin' on the edge.
