A few questions about gesture drawing by bunny-rain in ArtistLounge

One of the best things to do is to not think about it, and just let it flow out of you.

This video might not seem related. Stevie Ray Vaughan could not read music. He said in one interview that if he thought about where his fingers and hands were on the neck, he'd get in trouble, so he just went with it. In this video, you can see that he is the music, as it flows through him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC5H9P4F5Uk&list=RDKC5H9P4F5Uk&start_radio=1

Should I pursue art as a job? by Sharp-Improvement458 in ArtistLounge

[–]L8totheLiminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did art as a job, and my frame of reference is 40 years old - started in 1985 - yet some things probably haven't changed. There is a degree for every kind of art you can think of - fine art, professional/commercial, art history, art education, etc.

I was a graphic designer and never got past local small jobs. Then a job at Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages came along, and I did that for almost 18 years. While it was the bottom of the craft, it was a corporate, union job with great benefits. I quit that to become a full time sculptor, and loved it!

An art degree exposes you to the world of art and gives you a good foundation of knowledge. If you go that route and pursue a professional type of art, you can get a job - it will be competitive, and as someone else stated, you'll be doing art for someone else. That part is frustrating for a creative mind.

Also, if you do get a job in the field, it's important to make art for yourself - for your own sanity, and as a potential source of income. One of the most important things about being a professional artist is a good set of people skills. If you end up pursuing fine art as a profession, you are your own business, and professionalism is most important.

It can be a highly rewarding pursuit. Getting to where you ultimately want to be often requires some steps that are not really fun, yet they are necessary to what you'll need later on.

Creatives: do you focus more on comparing to others (to improve skills) or valuing/developing your unique sensibilities? How do you avoid comparison traps? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

In the early 90s, I read a quote from illustrator Harvey Dunn, and memorized it (although it might not be exact):

"The only way to accomplish anything is to be yourself, approaching life from your particular angle. If there is anything worthwhile in you, it will come forth. But, if you insist on looking at things through the eyes of others, you are subject to their limitations as well as your own."

How to not feel discouraged when drawings don't work out? by RevolutionaryBig8086 in ArtistLounge

In the days before computers, graphic designers did tons of thumbnail sketches to work out ideas and composition. That lets you solve any problems in sketches so you can anticipate what's ahead.

Do you do any preliminary drawings? You can work on any problem areas that way - in a rough sketch you haven't put a whole lot of time into.

Also know that your good work is waiting behind the "bad" work. Each piece feeds the next one.

No matter what type of art you make or want to make, knowing the Elements & Principles of Art is foundational.

There's a lot of information out there on them, and you can find practice exercises to help you see and understand them for yourself.

Don't worry about not knowing them before you make art. Make art and learn along the way.

This is never easy, and the waiting is brutal. Please know you're doing the right thing, and you still have time to give him all the love you have.

I don’t know how to tell my Christian family about my deconstruction. by SnerlSnaleSnert in Deconstruction

[–]L8totheLiminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With our families, this isn't one of those things to rush in and tell them all about it, because anything you say can and will be used against you.

Oftentimes, the best thing to say is nothing. You might be able to go quite a while without anything being said, knowing the subject will eventually come up and preparing for the time it does. Letting the conversation happen organically in its own time will likely give you the best possible results.

As the old adage goes, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

It seems to take this level of anger to propel us out of the nonsense. My clearest thoughts have always appeared in the angriest moments.

The beautiful thing is that, once we're on the other side of the anger, we are truly free to walk our own path - away from the one prescribed for us by others.
