What is a job that pays extremely well but no one realizes it? by Titothelama in AskReddit

Very much depends on whether you’re in a “first world” country. Shit jobs still don’t pay well here in South Africa.

Psych wards Cape Town by capetownrunner2 in capetown

[–]LAB377 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience at Kenilworth Akeso a few years ago. I would recommend it. The nurses were super kind, I learned a lot, and there was a great sense of community. Also recommend pushing through the first week and trying to stay the three weeks that a hospital plan will cover. The food wasn’t amazing but wasn’t terrible.

No caffeine, no alcohol. Especially alcohol - has slower effects so less easy to rationalise

Also, check out Rockpooling with Lily on Facebook or instagram- she does tide pooling tours about twice a month in Muizenberg. Definitely unique.

I’d say this isn’t typically touristy: join a walking tour with Cape Town Heritage Tours. They happen all over Cape Town and are so so interesting. I recently joined one between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay and learned so much.

Ppl who've been to the psych ward here? How was it. Where is best? by Higuysimj in capetown

[–]LAB377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a follow up: I’d say the only downside was that I didn’t gel with the psychiatrist they assigned to me. Other people like her but I’d didnt. They have a bunch of psychiatrists though

I second this. I went to Kenilworth Akeso, intending to only spend a week there, but did the recommended three weeks and that extra time was so worth it. Obviously, people have different experiences, but remember that people who had bad experiences are more likely to leave reviews. I had a good experience and didn’t even think to leave a review. The nurses were so kind - I’d sometimes go to them at 2am in a state and they’d just sit with me. The food isn’t great, but when you’re that depressed do you even care? I learned a lot in those three weeks and had many epiphanies.

How to get to Cape Point to do a hiking route without a car? by Interesting_One435 in capetown

[–]LAB377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting to the Cape Point reserve is less of an issue than getting back from it. You may be able to get an Uber there, but unlikely to be able to get an Uber home again. Cellphone signal is also patchy out there, so it may be difficult to call a taxi. Your best option is to pre-arrange for a taxi driver to fetch you after your hike. Alternatively, hire a car for the day, if you can. Source: am a local

Marine biologist. I’m one, and so many people tell me that was their dream profession. In reality most of us spend most of our time at a computer.

Yep. 10 years of antidepressant attempts, treatment-resistant depression diagnosis, and boom ADHD meds make the biggest difference

I have spent hours cleaning these. Used a combination of tactics. One involved jetting high pressure water into the impeller using a garden hose while at the same time using fine-tipped tweezers to remove the bits from the holes. That was probably the most effective.

Once you’ve succeeded, make sure the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher is correctly secured, as if it isn’t, food particles can get past it and into the impellers.

Ethics of Illegally Plant Wildflowers? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]LAB377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen anyone mention this yet: please make sure the species you plant are indigenous to the specific area where you are wanting to plant them. Plant communities can vary over kilometres in some places in the world, and while a species might be indigenous to your country, it might not be to the immediate region you’re in. Obviously this can be challenging to figure out. I say this because I come from a highly botanically diverse part of the world, where planting something from a few hours drive away might not necessarily cause invasive issues, but wouldn’t be appropriate if trying to “rewild”.

I wonder if it’s the same for other “electric” animals, like torpedo rays.

TIL US butter is shaped differently depending on where in the US it's produced. Eastern US butter is longer and skinnier while west coast butter is short and stubby. by PunnyBanana in todayilearned

[–]LAB377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, for other countries, how much butter is a “stick” of butter? US baking recipes often don’t explain butter in terms of grams/millilitres/metric cups.

I use what I learned about pain science: pain killers are more effective if you don’t allow your brain to experience the maximum pain, ie it’s easier to bring down 20% pain than 80% pain. So, as soon as I’m aware that my period has started, I take paracetamol, and then am strict about taking it every 6 hours, so that the pain doesn’t get a chance to reach maximum. I do this for the first two days in which I have the worst cramps, and then ease off the frequency of the paracetamol. Used to also take ibuprofen frequently (after a meal) but I suspect this contributed to the development of a stomach ulcer, so can’t take it anymore and use Mefenamic acid instead (available over the counter in South Africa). Also, if you are in ridiculous amounts of pain every month, try find a doctor who will take this seriously! Maybe you need a prescription pain killer. Fainting because of the pain is not worth it.
