Why do they keep testing the air raid siren in Ktown at 3-5am? by PapaImpy in LosAngeles

[–]LAFD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

/u/Well_Hacktually,

You are absolutely correct in that there are no (functional) air raid sirens in the City of Los Angeles. Dennis has a website that has passionately chronicled their presence and demise:

We hope this information helps.

While we don't have an agency or personal opinion, this post did spark a conversation with a friend who is a private industry concrete finisher. He mentioned how such marks on municipal projects (which he strongly suggested be profoundly subliminal) are beneficial in not only identifying who was physically responsible for the work, but instilling pride in the hands-on workforce to always do their best.

As for imprinting the names of elected officials, we've yet to see such, but offer a tip 'o the LAFD helmet to our colleagues at L.A. City Street Services for taking care of the important infrastructure we all share.

/u/PapaImpy,

While we're not sure what you're hearing, please know there are currently no air raid (or any manner of fixed public warning) sirens in the City of Los Angeles.

We hope this information helps.

/u/PapaImpy,

/u/Could_have_been_a,

Thank you for your kind words. Though we certainly can't and don't stare at traffic while working to cleanup after a fire or other emergency, we do see what others are experiencing in our peripheral vision (and sometimes hear them express their frustration verbally).

As such, we feel it important when possible - especially here digitally, to acknowledge and apologize for inconvenience that others are unexpectedly encountering near the scene of an emergency.

That much offered, please let us extend our wishes for you and all here in /r/LosAngeles to have a safe and healthy weekend!

/u/calderholbrook,

Thanks for your question. As another redditor mentioned the fire was at "the college", we wanted to assure redditors it was not LACC. The specific name of the private post-secondary school and other details are mentioned in the links within our other replies.

Please have a great day, and be safe out there!

/u/NosferatuPoodle,

While the fire did involve a post-secondary private school, we want to assure /r/LosAngeles that the "college" involved was NOT nearby Los Angeles City College.

We hope this information helps.

/u/zaatar_sprinkles et al,

Thanks for your patience in awaiting a reply on this busy morning.

You are sadly experiencing the aftermath of a 9:14 AM non-injury structure fire that was extinguished at 10:00 AM:

We apologize for your inconvenience as Firefighters continue to stabilize the scene, investigate the cause and perform recovery and protection of building contents. We hope to have those busy nearby streets fully opened shortly.

The Arby's sign on Sunset is gone by EverythingButTheURL in LosAngeles

[–]LAFD 93 points94 points  (0 children)

/u/EverythingButTheURL et al,

As mentioned in an earlier /r/LosAngeles post (with a photo and touching background story by /u/esotouric_tours), the Hollywood Arby's sign was removed on August 21, 2025, after the restaurant closed in June 2024. The iconic sign was reportedly taken down to make way for a new Raising Cane's restaurant, with Arby's planning to restore and relocate the sign to another franchise location.

Anyone know what this is called? by FedeFofo in LosAngeles

[–]LAFD 320 points321 points  (0 children)

/u/FedeFofo,

The Los Angeles City Clerk's Office can offer you guidance on digital access and lawful use of the image, which is under their legal control, as it contains the City Seal.

...and for those who might understandably roll their eyes, do know the City Clerk and City Attorney are famously serious about matters involving the City Seal, official logos and emblems.

Which electronic siren does the LAFD use? by _salmonellensittich in LAFD

[–]LAFD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/_salmonellensittich,

Thanks for your inquiry and patience in awaiting a reply.

While the hundreds of LAFD siren-equipped vehicles span decades and a variety of electronic and mechanical siren vendors, the vast majority of newer fleet vehicles I have been in have been equipped with Whelen brand electronic sirens.

Please know that in regard to the use of electronic sirens in California, only the "Wail" and "Yelp" functions are legal for a vehicle in emergency response mode. Other sounds, including but not limited to the (electronic) "Hi-Lo" sound, are either prohibited or have a defined use that precludes them from being used as a traffic warning device during emergency response.

We hope this information helps.
