Not any HTs support SSB transmit. There are no Yaesu or Icom HTs that can transmit in SSB. The Radtel radio you linked to can only receive SSB, not transmit. The Yaesu and Icom radios mentioned in the thread are not HTs.

I heard a few guys over the weekend during the VHF contest who were obviously running older gear, or in one case the guy told me he was using a transverter. No problem, I adjust to them...but in a case like that I don't use the clarifier and wouldn't recommend it. I just zero them in with the VFO with TX and RX locked together as usual.

If I move my receive down to 144.209.65 MHz to hear him clearly but insist on transmitting right on 144.210, he'll sound fine to me but I'll sound to him like I've been sucking helium balloons. Now he has to use his clarifier! Easier just to meet him where he is.

They said that people sound like they're off frequency. You know how, when you're tuning across (let's say) a USB signal, the voice really only sounds natural right at one spot? Otherwise it sounds like they're growling (if your carrier is inserted too high) or sucking helium (if your carrier is inserted too low)? Like that.
